[Help Thread] Hoya Discussion

Well For fun the other day I used hoya on 6x6 and I did very good for me and got two consecutive sub 4s. I think it worked out well because I am so used to using hoya for 4x4 and 5x5.

EDIT: I tried again and I am pretty sure I broke my PB single, so I may be onto something.

EDIT AGAIN: Another solve and another PB single, 3:36.88

You may wanna update your sig.

On the topic of Hoya edge cases, should I start learning various cross edge cases or should I just stick to the 2 'standard' insertions for sub 1?

It's nice to know some easy tricks for common cases. Both Nilsibert and I have videos going over a bunch of them on our channels. Important note: I don't always use the solutions I provided, and in many cases we found better algs after I made the videos.

But I think of it like intuitive F2L... using the 2 standard insertions CAN get you far, especially after a lot of practice. Aaron was sub-1 even before we started compiling algs for the different cases, sub50 even. But they're not always the fastest or most efficient solution. Personally, I wasn't getting regular sub1 times until I started learning the special cases.

Sorry I didn't really have time yet to make a video because I had the pleasure of visiting the hospital...yay. I think tomorrow I'll have time to record a view example solves. I struggle with video editing(or rather, exporting it with decent quality) though so no idea when it'll be finished.

Another Hoya-specific thing you could have is L2C algs that preserve the cross. JoeyVOV said he doesn't have to do the L-L' setup move, just an F, an Alg, and an F'. I already knew a couple, but CLL Smooth (another Hoya user on the forums) showed me a bunch of ways to intuitively avoid doing the L-L' setup moves, mostly involved 3Rw moves, and it's really helped me a lot.

I'm going to add some algs for this subset to my Hoya site. Does anyone have some nice algs for this subset that they'd like to see included?

Thanks to a very nice video :D

I got some nice hints in your video.

And.. I will tell you my tricks about your video.

2:40 - if I have this situation, I will do (D' R' F R F Rw' F2 Rw F2 U' Lw' U Lw) instead of (R' ~~) because I hate that my targets are located on the back.
But your solution is good, too. What I want to say is that ( Rw' F2 Rw F2 U' Lw' U Lw ) is pretty good.
And if I do (R' D')(like you), my next move will be (R' U' R [R3 U2 R3'] U' M' U M).

3:10 - is ( L M' U' M L' ) better than your solution? or ( L U2 L' M' U M )
I think that if you reduce moves , you can get more faster!

3:15 - This is my favorite case, if I have this case, I will do ( F , do not L) and locate green middle centre on l (small L) line, and do ( Lw F Lw' ) then I have 2x2x3 centres!

7:23 - This case is not bad, try ( F' U F' U R3 U' R3' Rw U' Rw').

8:05 - I made nice solution for this case two months ago, that is ( Rw2 U R U' Rw2 ) ( working for 4x4!! )

8:17 - ( D' R' D' U2 )

12:20 - ( R U R3 U R3' ) Then you can get the last cross edge on easy position.

So... I hope that my tricks can help you.
And thanks for reading my terrible English...! actually, I couldn't understand your say in video because my English listening is also bad.. orz.

Finally got a video of example solves up. Can only think of 2 tips I didn't touch on, but they weren't Hoya specific.

Please don't mind my terrible turning. Been a while since I've put a lot of serious 5x5 practice in.

Edit: apparently I did a bad job at showing the pieces during L8E... sorry guys.

Sorry for not making the video yet, I really didn't have the time yet. I think tomorrow I could film some walkthroughs, although I don't know if it's still helpful after chree made one, as he's clearly faster than me ;)

Joey's faster than me! So I definitely encourage you to make one, Nils. You come up with lots of clever stuff I never think of.
I second this. Thats why the 13 cubers one scramble videos are so fun, you get to see what others would do and their thought process. Id love to watch what you come up with. Some 4x4 walkthroughs would be good too.

Haha thanks, that's nice to hear Chris!
I'll make one tomorrow, hopefully I'll figure out the editing part. When trying to edit my last video on my computer, it looked horrible after the export, I suck at editing video. But I'll try, since making videos is actually great fun.

Btw I'll only do 4x4 walkthroughs, I never practice 5x5 and I suck at it;)

My biggest weakness at videos is that I'm too lazy to edit them. So I just try to do one take cuts. Which is why it takes me several days to get one take that I like. I actually did like 5 full takes of that 4x4 L2C video I just posted today. And it was the one with the least amount of mistakes.

We're pretty well matched at 4x4, so I'm looking forward to your video.

Your videos always crack me up. Your dialogue to yourself is funny. Like when you explained how you were calling Rw=R. Also the "Porpoise of this video" and the "whoa, what am I doing? What am I doing with my life" parts made me chuckle. All that said I think its still pretty impressive that you do your vids in one take. You can tell that you are very organized with what you are going to cover and I like how you categorize your move families. No real need to edit, they are good enough the way that they are. Yet another good video!
