[Help Thread] Hoya Discussion

Awesome job, once again thank you and can't wait for your walkthroughs also. I think that this will open a door to tons more 5x5 discoveries. I feel like there are many ways to link the two pieces for a multiple insert like you spoke about that we haven't looked into yet. Not sure that it will exactly lend to the most efficient style, but who knows. If nothing else, this has made Hoya super fun for me to play around with and try to figure stuff out. I am looking forward to more people doing example solves with Hoya. I really enjoy watching how other cubers minds work as they solve and always find things I can blend into my own style. I'm still focusing on 4x4 but like to tinker with 5x5 every once in awhile. Once I get my 4x4 times more consistently in the range I want then I am sure I will spend more time on 5x5 and this vid is very motivational.

Thanks you! And yeah, there are definitely more and different ways to think about linking 2 pieces in the U layer. Just this morning I thought of another possible way to think about this case: Setup: 3r U2 3r' U2 3r U2 3r' U2. You could join the pieces in the back by doing r U2 r', and then jump into a triple wide long insert. U' 3r U 3r' U 3r U' 3r'.

There were a few cases that I skipped just to save on time. And I didn't really talk at all about general strategy. Joey's probably gonna work on a walkthrough vidoe for 5x5 as well, which I'm pretty excited for because he's much faster at 5x5 than me.

Any better option for the FU'FrUr' case ? This one is truly horrible :(

That is indeed a crappy case. That's about as good as it gets.... you could also do: r U r' U2 F2

If you mean F U F r U r': then no... that's all I got.

There's also the F U2 F r U r' case... which sucks but that's still probably the best solution. But I've also found: (l' U' l) r U' r' F r U r'... which really really sucks.

Any one willing to film some example solves with commentary on what's going through your head while solving? I love seeing how others do things in real solves. There aren't really too many example solves right now.

I'd love to see them. I took a lot of time off of my solves from your tricks already so I'd love to see how you put them all together in solves. Plus sub-1:00 is pretty darn good if you ask me!

Try these:
Rw U' Rw' U Lw' U' Lw F'
and
F U' Rw U' Rw' F2

Haha thanks. I'm not really sub 1, I'm around 1:10-1:20 usually I think. I'll try to get time tomorrow to do some example solves, but don't expect anything too fancy ;)

Both of those are awesome!... I never saw Rw U' Rw' F2 before. That's a really good solution to a very common (and painful) case.

Btw... I saw on the accomplishment thread that you were doing Hoya for 7x7. What's your opinion on the movecounts/efficiency versus normal redux or Yau?

A couple weeks ago I managed a 1:04.65 Ao100 and was all proud... then I didn't touch the thing again until today where I got a Mo20 of 1:08.39 :-P... practice practice practice.

I keep saying I'm gonna make walkthru videos... maybe it's time I actually sat down and tried to do that. I expect that it will be several dozen takes before I get one I like.

Thanks :)

Well for the 3:49 solve I did with Hoya on 7x7x7, i finished cross and centres in 2:30 which 10 more seconds than usual for me. I think there's potential for it, I'm not a "great" Hoya solver, I think that only Jong-Ho is truly a great Hoya solver. Heck, no one even *knows* how to solve a 6x6x6 and 7x7x7 with Hoya. But I do think his cross+centres approach seems like it could be very fast for bigger cubes.

I just asked Hoya about using Hoya for 6x6 and 7x7, and his only response was "very inefficient", haha

Well For fun the other day I used hoya on 6x6 and I did very good for me and got two consecutive sub 4s. I think it worked out well because I am so used to using hoya for 4x4 and 5x5.

EDIT: I tried again and I am pretty sure I broke my PB single, so I may be onto something.

EDIT AGAIN: Another solve and another PB single, 3:36.88
