Hello everyone,

This is my first post here and I think not the last:-)
As you can see in the topic, I would like to ask you about your opinions on DIY cubes.
I would like to know if they are really the best and what makes them worth buying or not. What types and colours are mostly choosen by speedcubers and so on.
I have never had such a cube in my hands and I cannot compare it with my cube which I am using now. You may think: 'Oh what a problem? Just buy a DIY cube and then compare it with your cube' ;-) That is not so easy because DIY cubes are not available in my country (Poland) and I would have to order them from a diferent country which is connected with rather huge costs.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Best wishes,
czerav

Well I don`t think the DIY cubes are available in stores anywhere in the world..
But the rubiks DIY is far too expensive to order just to try it out.

On http://cube4you.com/ they allso sell DIY cubes which (as far as shipping goes) are way cheaper then rubiks.com

cube4you.com is realy a good store to shop for any kind of rubik's stuff. i got two diy kits and there are very good. they run very good right after assembly even without luping them. i dont know if they are the best, but it is very easy to make them fast. you basicly deside how your cube is going to be. i personaly have my cube more loose, which couses less friction between the cubies (easyer to turn and faster) and it lets you cut corners better. the cons about the looseness is of course the higher probability of a pop and the over turning. the colorscheme is basicly your choice as well. you normaly get the basic colores red, orange, blue, green, white and yellow. but you can alsow order different colores or make you own stickers. i ordered a punch of stuff at cube4you.com. the shipping price i think is always the same but you also get like premium point and dicount percentes for your next percase. i would recoment to ask any other cubers in your sorounding (or even country), if they wont stuff too and then splitt the shipping cost.
i realy recoment diy cubes and i dont think i will ever buy another prebuild 3x3 for speedcubing.

cube4you.com is really a great store! and so cheap! I could help myself adding some stuff to my order. and I am happy with all of what I got. the DIYs are so good even tho I got "C" and "B" quality.

I think I'll order some more soon to see if I could get a better cube. that would be amazing!

to tune it, set it REALLY loose and work your way down. and remember to tune it before lubing

Is the basic shipping okay on cube4you? I was gonna order some stuff today, but it would end up costing $40 for shipping alone if I used UPS. I didn't trust Chinese Airmail, or whatever the basic shipping thing was. But if it's good, I think I'll order some stuff. Their DIY's are way better than rubik's.

i used the chinese airmail and it worked fine takes a while but still ok. i also use it with ebay shipping and stuff and it always works.

i have a question considering the stickers. i use black instead of white. with the regular cubes i just have to peal off the orange stickers but now i have a white one and was wondering if somebody knows where i can order black pvc stickers or whatever stickers which wont wear off after a few weeks.

Screws and quality of manufacture. A > C > B. I have a transparent cube (available only in B) that would be awful for speedcubing. The pieces would need to be sanded down to make it decent. The A's on the other hand are very smooth out of the bag and break in very easily.

I also think that the actually material the cube is made of makes a difference; my orange cube feels especially different from my red and white ones, which also feel different from each other (all A cubes). It feels like the orange one is made of a softer plastic, while the red one is made out of a very hard one.

Order a set of way too good quality stickers at www.cubesmith.com ;)

I own an type C cube with the screws wich you can buy seperately at cubeforyou.com, the screw tension is very tight, but still it is very loose... I have to say they are very good cubes.

Currently I use this cube as a ''bringalong'' cube, so I take it to my school etc... because the chance that this cube will pop is very little, because it is screwed tight :)

so cubesmith produces black stickers then i guess? i thought the different letters mean the stuff that comes in. a=raped in plastic b=in paperbox c=the stand thing. are the cubes really made out of different plastic? what are the differences with the screws and springs?

Well I Cubesmith does also produce custom stickers, I think you can mail them and ask if they can make an custom set of stickers for you, but I think you will have to buy a lot of them... anyway just mail them :D
