51 yo grandma joins the cubing world! :)

Not sure how old you are but I've been on the 'net probably longer than you've been alive :) My first computer was a C-64 and I learned programming on it then I moved to an 8088 and then an 8086 and was building my own computers up until the 386 when it became cheaper just to buy one. My first modem was a 300 baud (if you even know what that is) and I was totally geeked when I "graduated" to a 14.4 :) Oh and my 300 baud was one like the one in War Games where you had to put the receiver on top as soon as you heard the connection tones. You knew you were a geek when you could recognize the speed of the modem you were connecting to just by the sound it made.
I'm nowhere even near as old as you. I'm only 32, actually. Your kids are probably only slightly younger than me, if younger at all if you have a 13 yo grandkid already, you and one of your kids must've started early. Well I guess the stuff about computers could explain it. I am just surprised at your using a younger language "tho"... "cuz"... "screw up"... which to me seems to be connected to the younger generation. Older people generally don't talk like that very much. Even I don't sound as young in type because I still mostly write out complete words.

You mean I beat out another female? One that is as old as me? Sweeeet - nice to know that other girls play with this funny little twisty toy with little stickers on it :) Oh, and I don't swear but I wasn't sure what the board would do with the breed of dog that I have so it's better to be safe than sorry. And thank you on the pronunciation - I know Chinese and Japanese is different. I learned a little bit of Chinese because I wanted to talk to the people who run the Chinese buffet here in town and the way it looks (in English letters) is NOT how I would expect it to sound.
There aren't very many females compared to males on this forum but we are here. Most are young people whether male or female so an older female is even more rare. I still consider myself young though. I'm not sure if you're older than crazycubemom though... anyone know? She's around sometimes.

You definitely have me beat there but what about grandkids???? LOL
lol... you can already guess the answer to that after I already told you my age. My oldest kid is only 5 years old so I don't think she'll be having any of her own anytime soon...

Edit: Oh yeah, and you probably want to learn how to multi-quote...

Crazycubemom is not older than you!
She's about my age (48)
To get an idea of my age: in 1981 I programmed result of 4x4x4 cube algs in Algol 60 running on a dec20 computer (using ponscards). The 4x4x4 didn't exist yet, the dec20 doesn't exist anymore.

Holy crow!! You were programming WELL before I was and I'm older than you. Impressive :) I'd forgotten about the Dec20s........feeling young again with the memories :)

Ah ha!!

Now I see the multi-quote button. Never saw it before. Well I did but paid it no nevermind. I'll use it the next time but for now since I'm a little bit in a hurry I'm just going to do a multi-answer.

My oldest son is 32 and my youngest is 30. I "type" in the younger generation style because I text with my grandson and phones don't allow (at least mine doesn't) for more than 160 characters before starting a new "page" and they tend to arrive to the recipient out of order. But those terms were in use WAY before this format came about. Back in the day we had IRC - Internet Relay Chat - You met in groups and typed like here and sometimes, more often than not in the beginning, they could see when AND what you were typing as you typed it. The LOL, ROTFL, LMAO, ROFL, and those other acronyms were around when the net was young. Words like newb or newbie were spelled this way until the younger ones started spelling it noobie or noobs so you'll see me post it either way. I'm 51 but mentally I've never grown up LOL When my kids were in school I was the "cool" mom. I wore combat boots (for real) and the other kids thought it was awesome. I'm a weird person and I'm happy with that.

The way I type here is the way I talk in person. Nothing is different except I don't say LOL or any of the other acronyms :)

Lessee - let's add some additional "info" about me. I'm hard-core military - especially when it comes to the Marine Corps - my dad was a Marine in the Vietnam war and I guess he instilled in me a love for the Corps. Always wanted to be a cop when I grew up but never made it - did make it into the Federal prison system as a guard and worked inside a low/ medium security institution inside the medium security section (the low security section was a "camp" outside the fence. I love knives - you'll find me with anywhere from 4 to 5 different knives at any given time if I'm outside the house. Not sure why I carry so many - guess I figure each one does something different so I want to make sure I have one for what I need it for. lol *shrug* Also like guns and have a concealed carry permit even tho I don't usually carry when I'm out in public. This could change the way things are changing but for now, I'm usually not armed - at least not with a gun.

I love the Chicago Bears - been a fan since '83/'84 (somewhere around there).

I'm a preacher's daughter - dad became a Southern Baptist preacher after he got out of the military. And no, he wasn't a chaplain there - he was a "target" - a radio man. He was in communications so he carried the radio which made him a target so it's a miracle he survived.

I love zombies and zombie movies. Been watching since the original "Night of the Living Dead" was released (without my parents knowing I was watching it a few years after it's original release when a friend of mine's parents dropped us off at the theater thinking we were watching one thing when we went to see NOTLD instead - dang near scared the pee out of both of us but we were hooked from then on. I don't think my parents EVER found out. I'll have to make sure they never see this forum LOL)

Um, only other thing I can think of right now is my oldest granddaughter had been diagnosed with Bilateral Retinoblastoma which is eye cancer in both eyes and we found out on a Monday and by Thursday morning she had lost her right eye. She was 15 months old. She's 8 now but is going into puberty already which is a scary time for children like her because even tho she is "cured" - since the cancer was in both eyes, it means it went through her brain which means it went through her entire body. Anything could trigger any form of cancer from now until she passes so when her body starts changing, we start watching REAL close. It'll mostly be ok after she turns between 18 and 20 yo but until then, everything gets a touch scary when something happens. But to see her now, you'd never know she had cancer. She never lost her hair, she only got sick when my son and his wife forgot and gave her milk after her treatments - only juice and water were allowed because the milk would make her throw up. To this day she will not drink pop/soda - water 98% of the time and the occasional can of Brisk tea that my husband likes. But when we go to dinner it's either water, or if they have it, chocolate milk (she doesn't remember the milk making her sick but she won't drink white milk - it has to be chocolate or strawberry).

So that's that and probably way more than you wanted/needed to hear :) But this is OT so I figured it was ok :)

Wow, that was a long post. You sound like a rebel, haha. I hate horror movies. Least favourite genre. Sorry to hear about your granddaughter. It must be hard having just one good eye. Hope nothing bad happens as she keeps growing. I guess I'm the opposite of her in that I will only drink white milk. I hate chocolate milk or any other kind of flavoured milk. But I don't like pop either.

Just to let you know that there is an IRC channel dedicated to cubing, not associated with Speedsolving.com, but where several people that are here chat with each other, in a way they really can't in the forums.
One can access it on top of this page, on top bar's "More >" button, "Puzzle Chat Room", or going to speedsolving.com/chat

i live near bradford too

but in UK lol

LOL I found out there are a LOT of "Bradford"s in the world. Kewl to know there's one in the UK too

Yah, I've got a rambling mouth/fingers - gotta watch myself so I don't go OT on topic specific threads cuz I can go on a tangent without realizing it :) And, as you noticed, I'm just a TAD verbose. Hard to shut me up sometimes which is funny because I hate talking to people voice-wise i.e. in person or on the phone (GAH I hate the phone) but I'll run off at the mouth anywhere I get to type. As I said - I'm a bit weird but that's a good thing. Don't wanna be like other people. Gotta be me. And yeah, I've been called a rebel before - that's among the nicer things :D I pretty much say what I feel and that puts people off a bit. So they've learned if they don't want a true answer don't ask me a question you don't want that answer for. BUT, I'm also a good listener (probably why I don't like to talk LOL)

And thanks, re: granddaughter. She's been that way as long as she remembers and she didn't even realize how "special" she was until she found out not everybody has an eye they can take out. We've talked to her about her eye for as long as she was able to know what we were talking about. Making "light" of it - telling her papa and I were going to get her an alien eye, or telling her when she's going to get her diploma she should stop, pretend to sneeze and roll her eye across the stage chasing after it screaming "I sneezed my eye out!! Somebody help me catch it!" so she didn't think she was different in a bad way. She's got 3 spots in her left eye that they had to laser for cancer spots in the hopes they could save that eye and they did. She's needing glasses now which isn't a surprise since her left eye has to compensate for the right not working but unless we tell someone you can't tell she only has one eye unless her eye gets stuck and she doesn't realize it. She'll get better about that when she's older and more self-conscious about making sure. It moves somewhat with her other eye when she looks around so it's not real obvious and those people that make those eyes are incredible!! It matches her left eye perfectly. You'd only know something was "off" if you noticed that her right pupil is fixed when her left is either small or large and her right isn't. We have to let doctors who don't know her know about her eye because if the light is bright, one pupil is small while the other looks dilated (which it's not - it's the same as what it would be in normal room light but it's a big difference in that respect) and that could lead them to believe she had a concussion. Course, that would change when they shined the light in her right eye but still - it'd be a bit of a shock if you didn't know - even for a doctor :)

Ok - time to shut up now - gonna go cube some more. Trying to get my brain wrapped around F2L right now :)

Oh - and as you can tell - I learned the multi-quote thingy LOL

Dear Guus, in 6 months/ April 2014, I'll be 50 years young girl :p Don't forget I'm still older than you. I know you don't like if someone saying that Maria Oey is an Old woman ahahahhahahaha.

Welcome Mrs Dojers, hope you enjoy with your Cube or cubes.

And I was starting to think that I was the queen of OTdom. I'm no combat-boots-knife-wielding-gun-carrying lady but I can totally relate to a lot of what you said in your first paragraph (I hate talking on the phone but will say a lot in type and have always been a non-conformist and a good listener.) I'm actually seeing a trend in the girl cubers here and elsewhere (may not be everyone), but it seems that girl cubers tend to be not as typically "girly". I'd actually like to ask more girls here about that. We must be a different breed or something.

Sounds like you taught your granddaughter the right attitude about her eye which is awesome.

Oh - wow - didn't think that still existed any more ;) Thanks! You'll probably see me in there some time

HEY!!! Another Aries (even tho I don't do Zodiac :D ) 4/6 here (you can figure out the year yourself :) ) And thanks - I am enjoying both of them although I thought I destroyed my original Rubik's Cube - Had hubby get me some CRC Silicone Lubricant and didn't realize I had to get after it quick until all of a sudden some edges weren't budging without some strength which I don't have a lot of! Kinda worried that I screwed up and used the wrong stuff but once I broke the "sticky" and twisted it and what not it got better. But I'm playing more with it now for that reason so I can make sure it stays unstuck. But I like my Dayan 5 ZhanChi 3x3x3 Speed Cube the best - that sucker will corner like nobody's business although I wish I had some gurus closer that could REALLY mod it for me. But since I'm still learning, it's plenty good enough for me. Plus I have another one coming in the mail - I love China - wish I could speak Chinese better - loved that video that showed how to pronounce the cube and company names - made me smack myself in the forehead when I watched it because I knew how to say those words properly - I just didn't think about it. I love the Chinese language - it's.... it's....soft and hard and mushy sounding at the same time (that sounds almost disgusting - my apologies) I think that's why it's hard to learn to speak it (reading it - until you learn about what each character means it's hard to understand the print when you're not born with it.

This totally made me LOL. I guess it's hard to be objective about a language when you can speak it yourself. I actually speak Cantonese though, not so much Mandarin... but Cantonese is much harder to learn because there are more tones.

You are unusual here in terms of being older plus female, but there are a number of other older folks on here. I'm your age - 51. And you're located close enough that if you come to some competitions, maybe we'll wind up at the same competition someday. Perhaps you can make it to an Ohio competition or something. Normally, unless I'm at a Nationals (thanks, Bruce Norskog) or Worlds competition or something, I'm the oldest competitor at the competition by at least 10 years. (I'm 10 years older than my wife, who often competes, so she's often the second oldest by at least another 10 years.)

I also started with Rubik's cubes when they first came out - I originally got hooked in 1981. I got going again in 2006.

I got a late start with kids, so my oldest kids are about the same age as your oldest grandkids. :) My oldest is 14; my youngest is 8. They all compete too - my youngest got her first competition cube solve at Indiana earlier this year.

Anyway, welcome.

And there would be even more old cubers, hadn´t we Old ones in time been told that competition is dangerous for us. So look up, Mike!

While I certainly understand that certain people with heart conditions might find competitions dangerous for their health (and I'm really sorry to hear it if that's happened to you, Rune - you're such a wonderful part of our community!), I suspect that barring such a heart condition, competitions might actually be helpful to many older cubers' health. It is good stimulation for the mind, it encourages socialization, and it gives some potential added purpose in life - all of those are things that have sometimes been claimed to be potentially life-extending actions. I'd like to think cubing is actually healthy for me. :)
