Is a knockoff of a knockoff possible?

Dayan is a knockoff of V-Cube becuase Dayan stole the design from the V-Cube 5. The edge and centers look like Dayan, and thus Dayan became a knockoff and added mods like adding the torpedos (that resemble the inner edge pieces on the E-sheen 4x4), rounding the corners for corner cutting and speed solving (which does not happen on the V-Cube 3), and changed the corners and the conical design (The dayan corner looks nothing like the V-Cube 5 corner section). Both the torpedos and the pieces in the V-Cube 3 do not follow the picture in the patent. So the V-Cube company took a different route, changing the pieces in the V-Cube 3 to look like a Dayan cube (which would make the final cube product faster) and to hold the pieces together, they had to steal the torpedos from dayan. So the V-Cube 3 became a knockoff of Dayan, a knockoff of V-Cube 5 and probably E-sheen 4x4.

Same thing with X-Cube. X-Cube is a knockoff of V-Cube and E-sheen according to MeMyselfAndPi's opinion here. X-Cubes came up with the bumps on their own, and X-Cubes don't use a conical design, but rather a cylindrical design. Now, in the V-Cube 4, there is a hidden 5th layer that you can't see while solving, but can see when you spread the layers apart. One specific type of hidden piece, called a midge, has a base that is very large and touches the core arms. So that's the secret why V-Cubes could not use hooks, blocks, or pretty much any alignment mechanism, those midges are in the way! So instead, V-Cubes stole the bumps from the X-Cube 4. It worked, but this made the V-Cube 4 a knockoff of an X-Cube 4, a knockoff of V-Cube and E-sheen. But then, V-Cube becomes a knockoff of X-Cube, a knockoff of a knockoff and E-sheen, in an endless loop. So we will probably never know what happened.

And one more thing... RedKB accidentally bought a KO 4X4. And Monkeydude1313 also accidentally bought a KO floppy cube.

So is it possible for someone to knockoff a knockoff? Please answer below.

I wouldn't call all those knockoffs if there were design improvements and such. I'd say they copied other people's ideas but not the entire thing. Real KOs are things like Fangcun. They should be more like copies of something that already exists and sold at a cheaper price, not something similar in design with a few changes.

The OP asks a good question. If you want to set him straight insults don't really do that or explain anything to him.

For the OP I would suggest that knockoff is a loaded word even a derogatory word with a whole bunch of assumptions about skill and motivation. Copy might be a little closer to neutral. What copying means and what motivates it can be viewed differently. There are also a whole host of other words we could also use; innovation, imitation, work-a-like, look-a-like, work-around, solution, fake - that let us see what is happening from a different POV or let us be more precise in what we mean.

Some of your facts are not quite established facts but are instead other people's conclusions. Human history especially business and art history is full of copying behavior and recent cube manufacturing is but one modern illustration. There can be five, sixth, seventh generation copies. An originator of a work may pick up details and parts from imitators if they are worthwhile. This is viewing things that have happened without moral judgement just surveying behavior and saying these sort of things have happened before and they will happen again.

I had a friend who is a gifted artist. In a bad non-productive period for him he would complain bitterly that other people stole his ideas. He wasn't out there executing the ideas one fifth as well as the people working so this "stole my ideas" protest won him no awards and produced no sales.

Knockoff threads are SOOOO 2011.
But seriously, I agree with sneaklyfox on this one. If it's a direct knockoff such as a Fangcun where nothing was changed then I don't buy it, but if it's a similar mech but with an improvement I say it's fair game. Where does it start and where does it end?

Would you rather have it so that no other companies are able to touch the technology for 15 years and be stuck with overpriced, sub-par V-cube products forever?

I can understand the Shengshou knockoff argument, (although I don't agree with it and think every cube SS has put out not only improves but blows it's V-cube counterpart out of the water), but Dayan 3X3 being a knockoff of V-cube is just insanity. If you want to split hairs, I say Dayan is more of a knockoff victim than V-cube ever was.

It's called "Eastsheen".

And I think most people here don't care about whether we label something a knockoff or not, just what's the best cube. Every 3x3 speedcube is a "knockoff" of the original one anyway, since they all have roughly the same exterior, are made of hard plastic, and structurally rely on freely rotating center pieces attached to a fixed core, with center and edge pieces held in by an interlocking and completely mechanical mechanism.

Shengshou. Who has knocked off Shengshou? (Some say MoYu, but with improvements)
