[Unofficial] Maxim Chechnev won the semi-final of the show Ukraine's Got Talent

Some people here are just jealous that someone less skilled(maybe) than some others here has got so much attention. Just because another cuber got attention and they couldnt.

On topic, great job. Great display of cubing community. In a fixed time limit, you do have to go out of your way and do something big to impress the large audience.

You've just made a moronic assumption.

I don't want to go on a TV talent show for cubing, it's not my thing. I don't care. I'm happy for whoever does though - it's good promotion for cubing.

This is nothing to do with attention. This is about people misrepresenting our sport.

How is fraud a "great display of cubing community"?

Now i finally know why people come to me and say stuff like: "Isn't there this asian guy who solves the cube blindfolded in like 5 seconds?!"
It's because of shows like this.
I also think its interesting, that these shows work in the same way in every country. If you wanne get far, you have to tell something REALLY REALLY private to the whole country. The more sad the crowd gets, the better the chance to get to the finals. It's the same in germany.

if the judges found out that he didn't actually do a legit bld solve and most of the cubes were scrambled the same (ie. "cheating" to make it seem more difficult than it actually was), they probably wouldn't have put him through to the final.

Really? It's just a show. Remember the autotune "scandal" on x factor?

I'm absolutely astounded that there are people that think this is ok. Absolutely dumbfounded.

I'm firmly against the spread of misinformation or deception. I don't care what the situation is. Being on a reality tv show shouldn't make deception and dishonest representation of your skills ok.

Even more incredible, this intentional misrepresentation of cubing is insulting to every single legitimate cubing accomplishment. This is why non-cubers believe there's a "secret algorithm" for solving the cube. This is why they don't want us to watch them scramble. This is why many non-cubers distrust our accomplishments. Ironically, people are going to be more trusting of this deception because it was on tv. How frustrating would it be to actually put the hours and months and years into solving a 7x7 BLD, and nobody is impressed because the person didn't memorize 20 7x7 cubes. What we do is ACTUALLY IMPRESSIVE ON ITS OWN MERITS. There's no need to lie and cheat for entertainment purposes. If it's not impressive to the public, it's because the public does not understand what we do. This ignorance should be fought, not taken advantage of. It's absolutely insane that any cuber isn't annoyed by this purposeful deceit, nevermind actually believing it is somehow good for cubing.

no i dont
On X Factor few years back, the producers used autotune software to modify the performances of contestants who couldn't sing in tune. That's the producers cheating, not the contestants. They don't care about the integrity of the performances. They just care about the viewer numbers and advertising revenues. It's showbiz not sport, so different rules apply.

I don't see how the autotune thing is a scandal at all. They're making the show, it's not live, of course they're allowed to edit it. People don't get annoyed that they cut between different scenes or switch cameras periodically, do they?

My point is that producers are happy to misrepresent a contestant's ability, whether in singing or cubing, for the sake of a good show. Whether we approve or not is a different question.

i agree with this 100 percent!

Well-well-well, to be honest, after seeing the show, I started expecting similar discussion, and this unfortunately came true.

I understand extremely positive reaction of speedcubers who tirelessly try to promote cubing and speedcubing in their areas, and I understand frustration of experienced blindfolders, who spent months and/or years for practicing 7x7 until their first BLD attempt became successful, thinking that their achievements may become less respected.

Despite of the conflict of interests, I think there are a "win-win" solutions. For example, if after the Final round Maxim will give an interview where he would mention "Solving the 7x7 cube even with open eyes takes more than 2.5 minutes, but I did it blindfolded in 1:50. You definitely should understand that we did something irregular for this, and, as you could see, our tremendous work made spectators enjoying this performance", this would be one of good solutions, saying between words that a lot of work is done, and at the same time cube was not solved under common blindfolded rules, and respect to the "super-blindfolders" will be maintained. I think this solution should be fair, but there should be some more.

If anybody has ideas how wording can be adjusted, you're always welcome to provide your thoughts. Time allows, it's still 3 weeks until the Final of the "Ukraine Got Talented" and it's a plenty of time to discuss all issues.

This performance has actually already inspired hundreds of people to starting solving the Rubik's Cube, what a lot of us about, and if together we'll generate an extra solution how to protect interests of expert-blindfolders (and this is really important), that would be absolutely amazing :)
