Hi I am Ben. I am living in beautiful Ireland but originally from South Africa.

I started cubing in my teens (about 30 odd years ago). Without access to resources on cubing those days it took me a few years to figure out a way to consistently solve the rubiks cube consistently. So a litte while ago I googled cubing to see if anybody else does it any different from me and as everyone here knows the information out there is overwhelming. So after recovering from my shock I decided I also want to speed solve. I timed myself using my own method and got an average of 2 minutes 28 seconds. So I switched to CFOP and promptly increased my average to over 8 minutes. Since then my times have come down. It dropped quite a bit in the beginning and more gradually later on. Currently my PB on the 3x3 is 42.17 and my average is around 49 seconds. I do the 2x2 in 9 seconds flat using LBL but am moving over to other methods to see if I can get better at it. My best time on the 4x4 is 4:15 but I just bought a Shengshou V3 from HKNow and plan to actually start practicing 4x4.

I am also a big fan of other types of twisty puzzles. I play with anything from different size cubes to the dodecahedrons to cuboids and bandaged puzzles and weird shape puzzles and mods and everything else that grabs my fancy. I also own a couple of rubiks clocks and a magic. If time allows I also plan to do a mod or two myself in the not too distant future.

Other than cubing my life is pretty much shared between spending time with my lovely wife and kids and keeping a few airports around the world running (My boring day job :D ).

I came up with a LBL approach as i guess most people do. After solving the first two layers I first oriented the edges of the last layer and then permuted them. I then permuted the corners and in a final step oriented the corners two by two. I did not understand the theory then but the last steps were all done with commutators. So to some it up: a variation of the many beginners methods you can find on the web.

Thanks ellwd. I live in county Donegal so not too far from Tyrone. Did you attend the northern irish open earlier this month?
