I am 41, living in Delaware and got a cube for Christmas. I stumbled upon Badmephisto's YouTube tutorials which led me here. I ordered two Black 3x3x3 Dayan GuHong V2 II cubes since I am sure they are far better than what I am using now. The cube I currently have functions well enough for me to learn the basics but good lord it is a pain to work with. With the new cubes I plan to work at this and get faster. So we'll see how long it takes this old dog to learn new tricks.

Hi Doug! welcome aboard. I've been going over badmephisto's page too. Some really good vids and links there. Are you going to use CFOP (Cross,F2L,OLL,PLL) method?

Yes, that is the method I am learning. It is slow going for me but I am almost to the point where I can solve the cube without looking at any of the algorithms. I only have to reference one now. I do have to work on my hand coordination. I look like fumbling ***** right now.

Hey dude , Don't feel bad if you are slow bcuz I is slow too, although I'm not sure if that's a good reason to not feel bad about it lol . I am 41 too and live in Minnesota. I just ordered two speedcubes too and a 5x5 just to play around with since it was on sale. I'm not much of a speedcuber and my times will probably be too embarrassing to post any time soon but it is a cool hobby for me. I just reached about the same point as you where I can solve it without looking at the algorithms except for two or three of the LL perms at the end.

I've spent about a good week really learning the beginner method and I just thought I had a mental issue because I just could not get the algorithms right or memorize them. But I kept at it and now I can solve the cube on average in two minutes without referencing the cheat sheet (or quick reference sheet). It was really frustrating but now that I have it down I can see why the folks in the other parts of this forum say that the more you learn the easier it becomes. Practice every day and it all starts to gel and stick. And miraculously it starts to make sense. It is great fun. Also a great mental diversion.

fixed.

It's pretty good that you already average 2 mins, it took me longer than you to get to that point.
And it's good that you're enjoying this now, cause the more you cube the funner it gets!
Plus it's a great brain workout when you're learning, as opposed to like watching TV or something like that.

I know I'm addicted. I was solving the cube in my dreams last night. I couldn't sleep until 2am and I was solving the cube all night trying to get the white cross solve faster. Once I did fall asleep I was dreaming that I was solving the cube.

LOL that's pretty awesome. i guess you found your thing. how fast could you solve it in your dream?

and just to make sure you're on the right track, you're doing the cross on the bottom?

Yes. Cross on the bottom. I am getting more consistent with the solving and getting through most situations cleanly. Like there have been a few odd permutations that I have run into that I have to think about for a bit. But mostly getting through all the way without much trouble. It's so much fun. I just bought 4 mini cubes. The 3 cm sizes. Keep them in my jacket pocket for breaks at work or while in waiting rooms. In my dream that one night I was solving them about as fast as in real life. But I was actually solving them the way I do now. Pretty crazy. I am getting some of the guys I work with into cubing as well. So maybe we can one day, all have a competition for who buys lunch.
