Hello! I just got my first cube and have a question...

Recently, I've had a freak obsession with cubing, and I've been trying to learn how to solve a cube for a few days using cube simulators. I bought a cube the other day and it should be getting here soon.

I've been learning using the Tyson Mao video, and am trying to memorize the algorithms from that. I know it's not a real speedcubing method or anything, but is there any other methods you could suggest for me to learn? As I'm getting the cube in my hands for the first time soon, I have fresh muscle memory to learn any better beginner algorithms. Thanks.

ZZ is fun. I use it.
Most people use CFOP, and Roux is also very popular. Look into those methods, along with Petrus, which is still used by some.

Oh, here's my thread for advertising my how-to Youtube video.

Start with CFOP. Easy to transition to from beginner's method. If you don't find it very appetizing to your style, try Roux. If you STILL don't like it, try ZZ. If you don't like any, just become a collector :D

Use a walkthrough for a few solves of ZZ, Petrus, Fridrich, and Roux. Once you've done that, pick one that seems the most fun/interesting/suitable for you and try using it for awhile. If you change your mind, that's perfectly ok. There is no set method, everyone has their own preferences. I personally prefer Fridrich for speedsolving.

Learn Roux.

Roux i must be the magical answer to every question.
I need help with f2l - learn Roux
What is the OLL parity algorithm?- Learn Roux
What H perm do your recommend?- learn Roux
Do you recommend the Zhanchi? -only if you learn Roux
Is Feliks Zemdegs fast?- no he does not use Roux
Is the SS 4x4 good? RROOOOUUUXXXX

Not to be a Roux hater but this is annoying. I think the Roux method is fasinating, but spamming RRROOOUUUXXX is not cool.

I agree completely. Some Roux users need to chill out.

This could not have been said any better.

Don't worry about it too much. Nearly every Roux user has gone through this phase. Some grow out of it, and then some just stop using the method when it becomes uncool for them. The only reason it seems to be growing is because the amount of Roux users is growing faster than every before.

:EDIT: I should probably post something OT too...

I'm biased towards Roux as it's my main method. However, it's not the method for everyone. No matter which one you've chosen, or even if you've already chosen, I recommend trying them all out for just a little while. It will really help you understand the cube better, and most likely make you faster in the long run [citation needed].

I think the appropriate answer is "try them all and decide by yourself" All methods have good and bad things.

I personally wouldn't recommend Roux for beginners, as the blockbuilding phase is hard if you haven't used blockbuilding before (same goes with ZZ EOline) the rest of the solve is easier and smoother than on CFOP, though.

All the above just my personal impression, of course :)

I understand that these one line answers might be annoying and frustrating but I would like to see a generation of cubers that are Roux solvers. There are relatively few Roux solvers; this means that it's difficult to know how fast it is compared to CFOP. (Is it the users that are particularly fast or is it the method that is giving them the edge).
However, I don't think that people should automatically go to Roux and assume that it will be the best method for them because someone says it will; try things out and attempt to get fast with Roux. If you don't like it at first, try another method with which you feel more comfortable.
I would like to see more Roux solvers but I want those people to enjoy the method they are using! Enjoyment is more important than speed.
