I found an old paper dated around the last day of school of 2008.
It says this:

"Summer Goals:
Learn Petrus
Learn Roux
3x3 OH
3x3 BLD
<45

4x4 Times to <4 mintues maybe <3
5x5 Times down a good minute
Finish Guimond
2x2 times to <5

"

I read that and got very sad. This is my progress:

Learn Petrus-- Check!
Learn Roux-- Check!
5x5 Times down a good minute-- Check!

that's it.
I am not the most constant cuber here, and with band I don't have much time to devote to cubing, but you'd think after 3 months off and on of doing just petrus and roux (and the occasional LBL which I have now vowed not to do) that I could at least be down to under a minute. My times still sit at 1:10, pb is 1:06. That is very disappointing. I feel like I've gotten no where and even with my fancy new DIY that I got here at mtc isn't bringing in record times for me. My 2x2 broke at band (when someone tossed it to me and I didn't catch it) and I don't have all the pieces ( I am missing one little piece, I have 7 of them and assuming I need Cool and since someone also dismantled my 5x5 (for NO REASON) I have all the pieces but haven't had time to fit them back together.. I just can't complete my goal within a week.
[wow that was bad grammar on my part..]
What can I do to start getting my times down, fast, and start improving my cubing? I still have 13 more days till school starts which I believe is enough time to drop 10 seconds, if I knew what to work on. Since I can't complete Guimond of play with a 2x2 at all since it's broken I just want to learn the rest of those 4x4 parity algs and get my 3x3 solves down to at least under a minute.

I guess what I'm trying to get across in this rant towards myself is.... what should I work on to get my times down to under a minute in 13 days? Or is that even possible?

In the mean time, I will just be working on 4x4 parity algs, I can't seem to memorize those pesky things..
Though I could use my 4x4 as a 22 and continue working on Guimond.

whatever..

How many Roux algorithms have you learned? I also have the same problem... and I can't force myself to work on LBL or Fridrich, because they're so boring and I'm not gonna memorize a gazillion and a half fridrich algs!

I would recommend that with your faster method, you analyze each section, record your times and post them here. So with roux, your problem might be the initial block building, or maybe you don't know the algs, or maybe you get mixed up on the last 6 edges. I've been learning the Ortega/Jelinek method which can get me into the Roux last six edge part with fewer alg.s...Ortega has an average of 58 moves per solve, while Fridrich has 53-55. What I like about Ortega is it has under one-third of the algorithms. Hey, I'm still the fastest at LBL, which annoys me. Plenty of people can do LBL under 30 seconds, but neither of us wants to put all that time in.

Anyway, you should post each section of your solve. Also, I recommend you work on Roux, because Petrus takes a lot longer to master. Good luck!

And don't try do do everything in under two weeks... By the way, I only ever use two 4x4x4 parity algs, and one of them's really easy...

I don't know if I said too much because I haven't slept in like 48 hours... My brain hurts.
But I'll end by saying, May the force be with you!

why is everyone whining about all the fridrich algs, just learn them

my biggest problem with Roux and Petrus alike is the initial block building.
Unfortunately, cubing isn't exactly the biggest thing where I live (isn't like a cubing club or anything, and only 4 people including myself can solve it at my school of a little over 2000) so I can't go to someone REALLY good at petrus or Roux and ask him to show me some tricks... the other 3 people at my school all use LBL, so I'm it as far as petrus and roux..

i'm not learning fridrich because personally I don't like the method. Not because of the algs, it's because Petrus and Roux both seem like a more logical and faster way to solve it.

I'm not using fridrich because I would lose interest in the rubik's cube by the time I did all that memorizing. Plus, all those superfast asian cubers already have fridrich covered, and will always be ahead of me there. And, it just doesn't make sense to cover up the basic method's inefficiency by throwing in a bunch of algorithms.

I like ortega because its somewhere in the middle. It's corners-first, and there's not much block-building, and not too many algorithms (if you want to learn every last one, there's 25, but if you do a transition to roux in the middle, you cut out the nine toughest algs)

People do whine A LOT about Fridrich's algorithms. t's only 78 algorithms. If Jason is memorizing full ZB and not whining about it everytime he learns a new one, you can grow up enough to work through 78 algorithms.

2x2 times to <5

That's top 20 officially. I don't really think really possible at your stage.

_____________

And for learn block-building methods, they require good look-ahead and I suggest practicing keep building block over and over like some people do with cross. And you should find some shortcuts and increase your look ahead.

lol I only have 3 memorized, and since two of them are the same, then I only have two algorithms memorized. for whatever reason I can never remember
D*, R, F', U, R', F, D'* (to fix last two edges) and of the parity I only have

1) 2U*, 2L*, 2U, 2l, 2U, 2L*, 2U*, R, U', L, 2U, R', U, R, L', U', L, 2U, R', U, L', U

---> this one2) 2R*, 2B, 2U, L*, 2U, R'*, 2U, R*, 2U, 2F, R*, 2F, L'*, 2B, 2R*

---> and this one 3) 2r, 2U, 2r, 2U*, 2r, 2u

4) 2U*, 2L*, 2U, 2l, 2U, 2L*, 2U* F', U', F, U, F, R', 2F, U, F, U, F', U', F, R

memorized..

Yeah, but i didn't realize that until after I learned 4x4 from him...

D* is same as Dd.

so for example 2U* = 2(Uu) or (Uu)2
