So while I've been into cubing for several months now, I've never been to a real competition.

I saw some posts about the US Open and saw the "qualifying scrambles" - so this means you first have to qualify? Or do they put you in heats?

How does a typical competition break down? Like:

1. Qualify
2. Compete
3. Etc...

?

Well, I think It varies from competition to competition, because when I went to the minnesota open this year, it worked like this for 3x3
1 First Round Avg. of 5
2 Second round top 16 people compete in an avg. of 5

It also worked like that for 2x2, But for 4x4, master magic, magic square-1, etc. it was just one round.

Technically, the 4x4 was a combined final, but at the MN Open, I have extremely lenient times (5 minutes). But yeah, if someone got two 8 minutes solves on the 4x4, they wouldn't have complete the average of 5.
