I had a couple of really unusual lucky solves today while doing 5x5x5 random scrambles. Both were "lucky" because of the 3x3x3 part at the end. On one of them, I finished the first 3 pairs of the F2L, and discovered to my surprise that the entire cube was solved except for 2 corners that were twisted (one of them was the remaining pair for the F2L). I recognized it and did my BLD algorithm to untwist them. Not quite as good as an LL skip, but almost!

Then just a few solves later (again on the 5x5x5), I finished the first 3 pairs of the F2L, and discovered to my surprise that the entire cube was solved except for two tredges flipped (one was the edge of the last remaining pair for the F2L, so they were adjacent instead of opposite). So I did my BLD algorithm to flip 2 edges to fix it (ugly on a 5x5x5 with the slice moves, but still better than last pair/OLL/PLL). Again, not quite as good as an LL skip, but almost!

Weird I got these so close together.

Anybody else have any fun unusual lucky solves like this they'd like to mention?

That reminds me of this solve Mike:

Scramble: D' F' D2 L B U2 L2 F' R U2 L2 D B F' D2 R2 D2 R D L2 U' L2 R2 B F'

Solve:
x2 R' D B' U2 D2 L2 D'
L F' L'
U' F U2 F'
F' U2 F R U' R' U'

And for Kenneth: That's basically 2 times a corner-OLL-skip and 1 time an edge-PLL-skip. The chances of exactly that happening might be very small, but the chances of skipping 1 out of 3 steps 3 times in a row isn't that low.

Argh, this reminds me of a post from Chris H, I'm trying to think of some good keywords to find it again.

I had a nice solve once. I paired up my last CE pair, and saw that if I did x J perm to insert it, I would skip the LL :)

Yes, you are right, it makes 27*27*12=8748 and that's less than a compleate LL skip, that I had a few over the years.

I once had a 2x2 scramble that only needed a sune... That's why I stopped using cubemania, the scrambler kept giving me horrible scrambles.

I once got 3 PLL skips in an average of 5.

A lucky solve in an unlucky scenario: I was demonstrating the steps of Fridrich to some people at school who wanted to know how I solved the Rubik's cube. I was truning very slowly and commenting on what I was doing, with none of them really undestanding what was going on. I ended up getting an LL skip (my only one so far): if only that had happened in a real solve.
