How can i improve my 4x4 time?

can anybody give me any pointers on centers/edge pairing?

Use most of that inspection time to locate majority of the center pieces and you should easily be able to plan the first 3 centers so you can follow an adjacent color of the 3rd center to continue without pausing.

I almost never even plan the whole first two centers.

I must be quite special then that is a little too much especially when he isn't used to using the full inspection time. I should have also mentioned that it's normally an estimate of the 3rd center that gives extra time to look-ahead.

Try pairing 2 or 3 edges at a time, so it goes by quicker.
