I ordered a eastsheen pack from huskyomega with a 4x4 and a 2x2.
I am very excited about it.
I am so split up between ortega and guimond!!!!!!!!!!!
I have read everywhere but i can't make up my own mind.

Ortega

Pros: Its like fridrich, first layer (not permuted), OLL, PLL

Cons: The first step takes a while and the algs for OLL are long.

Guimond

Pros: The first step is done 90 percent of the time!! The Orientation algs are short.

Cons: Maybe recognition? I'm not sure.

All in all, i reckon i will probably go with Guimond, unless you guys say otherwise with a good reason.

I don't see your point, just learn both....
Guimond is generally less moves and has easier recognition.
With ortega you can already predict the permutation of the first layer, but it's hard to predict the orientation of the 2nd.
But srsly, just learn both, ortega is only 3 extra algs and you'll need those at Guimond too...

If you already know most of Fridrich, the answer to this is simple and clear. Learn Ortega. It will only take you an hour or so. It's so easy you'd be silly not to learn it, even if you will focus on Guimond. Then you can decide whether or not you want to also learn Guimond. If you're serious about 2x2x2, you probably will. I haven't bothered yet, but I might someday.

The orientation algs for Ortega are not long, average number of turns is sub 7.

Here are the ones I use:

R U2 R' U' R U' R' (7) ... antisune, 4 of 27 are this case
L' U2 L U L' U L (7) ... mirror antisune, 4:27
F R U R' U' F' (6) ... the U case, 4:27
R2 U2 R U2 R (5) ... the H case, 2:27
R U R' U' F' U' F (7) ... the L case, 4:27
F' U' F U R U R' (7) ... the T case, 4:27
L' U' Ra U Ra' U' L (7/9) ... the pi case 4:27

Then there is a solved case that occures 1:27. If we sum up and divide we will get this:

S, 4:27 = 7*4 = 28
-S, 4:27 = 7*4 = 28
U, 4:27 = 6*4 = 24
H, 2:27 = 5*2 = 10
L, 4:27 = 7*4 = 28
T, 4:27 = 7*4 = 28
pi, 4:27 = 7*4 = 28 (Or 9*4 = 36)
Solved 1:27 = 0

Average turns: 174/27 = 6.45 (Or 182/27= 6.74 if Ra = 2 turns).

To solve the first step go colour independent and look for a side where two or more corners are oriented, then learn to solve the other two in one go, that can be done in about 3 turns on average.

Alright, this is a related question.. but i don't think it warrants a new topic. I know F2L and 4LLL, is there any point in me learning anything new for 2x2 or should i stick with learning Fridrich?

Here's the deal:

If you're lazy, learn Ortega, besides regular fridrich, it's 3 more algs. one of them is R2 F2 R2.

If you're not that lazy, learn Guimond.

Im learning both and trialing them to see which one is better over a long period of time.

I suspect that ortega will be faster at first, then guimond will overtake.

There are better methods like SS or OFOTA, and then the insane ones like EG...

Another one that I use mostly is one layer + CLL (42 diffrent cases).

(The algs at the page preserves F2L edges and all centres on a 3x3, in some cases there are easier ones for 2x2 like R2 U2 R U2 R2 for case "c13")

Edit: here are algs that do not care about edges and centres.

Exeption is if the first layer is hard to do, then I go for Ortega instead (only rarley Guimond). But then, if I see the case and remeber the alg I do EG (120 cases but that includes all 42 CLL's). I know how to solve most EG cases but many times I have to think a bit and that's not fast so I rather not do it when speeding.

I was wondering. Isn't SS just like Ortega, but with 3x more algs to get the last first layer corner in at the same time? That only saves an R U R' or something similar.

Thanks for all the responses! I'll learn ortega then, and practice till i'm sub-10 and then reassess.

I use ortega, and I've gotten sub 6 averages.
I use Ortega, and I've gotten sub-5 averages. Even though it may not seem that fast, when you're learning it, it's definitely much faster than normal Fridrich.
What is EG?

OFOTA?

SS?

Can someone give me links to these websites?
EG and OFOTA (along with other methods) can be found at Erik's old website (his new website, hosted at 110mb, is up, but he doesn't have the tutorials there yet).

SS is yet to be published.
