Just re-found the cube a few weeks ago. Since then have started to discover all the wonderful mods and info that is out there. The hobby has come a long way since 1980!

A youtube video helped me solve the stupid cube for the first time in 30 years. Since then I've gone out and grabbed a 4X4, 360 pyramid and a simple skewb. So far only the 4X4 is probably the best cube, since it seems to have a lot more replayability. I figure reading these boards should help me get the most out of the best of the new cubes, but thought I'd say hi instead of just lurking. :D

Thanks all!

Quick question, doing a lot of scanning of threads (not my first time on a board), and I wonder, are there obvious topics to avoid talking about? I see some guys seem to be pretty sarcastic(?) towards "non cubers".
The aim is to learn as much as I can about the hobby, not get into flamewars... sometimes it's easier to just ask first! :)

Good question to ask.
Try to avoid things like "how do I get faster?", "which cube is better"... etc.

If you have small questions you can always ask in The one answer question thread: http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?8710-The-one-answer-question-thread

And for maybe in the future: http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?27353-One-answer-BLD-question-thread.

Excellent. I was going to ask "what's the best tape to use to put the stickers back on my cube?" but I think I'll refrain. ;)

Seriously though, thanks for the links!

Well, you could always ask that question in the One Answer Question Thread (often referred to as the OAQT). Any simple question will be answered there without any fuss. Most of the frustration out of us comes from people making dedicated threads to questions that can be asked in the OAQT.

Welcome to the forums, and have fun!

I spent about 2 hours perusing threads. Wow, lots of good info here. Kind of inspiring, it would have been awesome to have this kind of thing in 1981 :) I bought a hand-drawn, self-published book from a guy that even had a fold out page back in the early eighties, and I still could never solve the stupid thing. Thanks to youtube I could finally solve it, and searching more I found this site. I've got my 1981 era cube sitting beside a 'speed cube' I just got, and the difference is unbelievable (except that the 30 year old cube still works, we'll see if the speed cube holds up that long!). Cheers guys, I look forward to getting as much as I can.

I grabbed a few, and a few more on their way. A silver chinese speedcube, a white chinese speedcube, and just ordered a ShengShou Slide rail. I also have some Maru lube that seems to work wonders.

I'm still at the ~3 minute mark, so to me, these will likely do for now. The silver generic speedcube is really good, it is very forgiving, if almost too easy/sloppy to turn (but is adjustable). I'm anxious to try the shengshou, I'd like a little more heft to the cube, it just doesn't feel right when it's featherlight. I have 2 genuine rubiks but they're honestly pretty frustrating to work with, they catch all the time.

I've picked up about 15-20 different cubes now. Most frustrating is the lanlan 4 vertex octahedron. I can't even figure out how to solve more than 3 complete sides, so I figure it's got to be a pattern-solve cube, but it's honestly fun. 4X4 was a little bit frustrating, but getting better, so I'll soon order some v-cubes.

There's so much variation, that I can see sticking with this for a while. Plus, the 6 figure income certainly helps... this could get expensive as I look at some of the really funky cubes. I don't know how some of the young kids can afford the collections they have! :)

Ooops, add to this: I ordered a Dayan GuHong 3x3x3 DIY Kit as everyone seemed to really favor it. There's at least 10 more cubes on the way, now I just have to wait patiently by the mailbox. I've been improving speed slowly, haven't broken 2 minutes on a consistent pace yet, and the 'speed' cube I'm using is too loose, and also catches too easy (which is why I put in an order for the dayan).

There almost is too much information on this board. I'm getting through bit by bit.

You seem to be a well-informed new member. And I find it awesome that you like 4x4 a lot (considering 4x4 is my favorite event). You should try going here every once in a while and checking to see if there are any new competitions. And you're going to LOVE your GuHong once you get it. It's quite frankly amazing.

Thanks, but reading the threads, I am petty sure I am not well informed at all about cubes!! lol
I do like the 4x4, it's got a lot more replay value than the 3X3X3, but I do find I'm getting sucked in by the appeal of faster and faster finish times on the 3x3 (the self timer on cubemania is awesome).
I've got a couple more 4x4x4's on the way, so it will be interesting to see how they are, as the genuine rubiks one is odd, it's too loose with the lube, but it still catches a lot. What do you recommend for a really good 4x4?

For a really good 4x4, I would recommend getting the Dayan+mf8. It sucks really badly when you first get it, but if you have Lubix with you, take the cube apart (including the shells on the ball core) and lube it there. Then, tighten the tensions. Put it together, and then retension it to your liking. But, if you want a cube where it's cheap and you don't really have to do anything to it, then get a Ghosthand II 4x4.

Sucks, I just ordered 3 more cubes last night, but I'll grab an mf8. I prefer taking them apart I think, I haven't found one yet that's right out-of-the-box. I'll probably order one of those up when the new ones all come in. Thanks for the tips.

I've got the maru lube, is the lubix better?
