Let us say that these are our standardized orientations for each of the 8 corner orientation cases (Ignore edge orientation):

And that these are our standardized orientations for each of the 4 edge orientation cases (Ignore corner orientation):

NoneCase.png

In this naming system, each OLL case will have either 2 or 3 characters to define it.

First character: Corner orientation (+, S, A, H, P, U, T, L)
Second character: Edge orientation (+, I, L, -)
Third character: Edge rotation relative to the standardized corner orientation (0, 1, 2, 3)

To name a case, orient the cube so that the corners are in one of the 8 standardized orientations, then determine the first character:

+: All corners correctly oriented
S: Sune
A: Antisune
H: H
P: Pi
U: U
T: T
L: L

The second character will be determine by which of the four edge orientations the case has:

+: All edges correctly oriented
I: 2 opposite edges correctly oriented
L: 2 adjacent edges correctly oriented
-: No edges correctly oriented

Finally, if the edge orientation is either of the "I" or "L" case, determine the number of clockwise rotations ("U turns") that would need to be performed on the standardized orientation (i.e., NOT the number of clockwise rotations that would need to be performed on the case to match the standardized orientation) to match the case's rotation. This number is the third character.

-----

I'll give a few examples to help you better understand if you're having trouble grasping the system.

Case Name: P+
PCase.png

Corner Orientation: P
Edge Orientation: +
Edge Rotation: Unneeded, because it's not an "I" or "L" edge case.

Case Name: U-
H-.png

Corner Orientation: U
Edge Orientation: -
Edge Rotation: Unneeded, because it's not an "I" or "L" edge case.

Case Name: HL (Or HL0, though the third character is redundant)
HL.png

Corner Orientation: H
Edge Orientation: L
Edge Rotation: 0

Case Name: TI
TI1.png

Corner Orientation: T
Edge Orientation: I
Edge Rotation: 0

Case Name: SL3
O7.gif

Corner Orientation: S
Edge Orientation: L
Edge Rotation: 3

It would also be possible to add a 4th character to define the corner rotation, thus allowing you to not only specify which case, but also which angle (for instance) an algorithm is to be performed at.

Questions? Thoughts? Improvements?

This is definitely a good TECHNICAL system but I would still prefer to go up to a cuber and say "Do you know the Sune?"

I'm suggesting this as an alternate, technical, system for the OLL's names that are well-known, but would you want to go up to a cuber and say "Do you know the OLL where there is an L of edges and a bar on the right and a dot in the front?"

Left Difatsune (two left fatsunes). OLL 53.

To a random cuber, "The bad L-shape with double headlights."

To me, it seems to be a bad standard to name cases after a specific algorithm used to solve it.

Also, like I said, I'm not out to replace all current OLL nomenclature, just to suggest a method which may work better in certain circumstances.

Either I am having trouble understanding your third character, or there is an inconsistency in your examples.

The way I see it, if HL is correct then shouldn't TI1 just be TI and SL3 be SL1?

Otherwise, HL should be HL2.

Please clarify.

No. It's SL3 if we are doing U turns. Setup an L in the top right on a cube, and do three U turns.

But in that example the "L" shape is in the top left side. Let's use proper terminology to be clear. In the example, the oriented edges are in the UL and UB slots. They need to be in the UB and UR slots. To achieve this requires U. Unless I'm going crazy.

Ah. We are on different pages here. The way I was meaning the edge rotation to be is the number of clockwise turns that the case is offset from the standardized orientation. So, since it takes 3 clockwise turns to get from the standardized orientation to the case's orientation, the edge rotation is 3.

Your system is just as valid, though, in my opinion.

Edit: Also, I explained it very badly. I'll try to fix that.

Ah right. You should make that explicitly clear because that was not what I intuitively thought and I guess many others will fall into the same trap. Your original post can be interpreted both ways.

Am I understanding this correctly?

I found this slightly awkward at first, but now I think that I could see this becoming quite fluent. I agree that if we both know what "Sune" is then that's the phrase we should use, but this would kill any ambiguity for the less famous OLLs.
