This is probably true for all lubricants....

But i noticed the larger drops of lubricant tend to erode away cube plastic. This is probably just from the petroluem based propellant.

So just as a warning you don't want to liberally apply this stuff too much. I have a neat little crater in an edge piece now...

In my experience, Jigaloo makes the plastic soft when it is first applied. It re-hardens in a few minutes after it dries, but it sometimes takes longer if you've accidentally over sprayed a piece. I've never had it actually eat away at my cubes though... Although I've accidentally scratched a cubie while it was still soft from the jigaloo. I just give it plenty of time to dry before re-applying.

Anyway according to Jigaloo's site, their products don't contain any petroleum, so I don't know what's causing it.

I am planning to get lots of cans of silicone when I make a trip to the USA in about a month, though. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have that softening effect and seems to last longer to boot, so I'm looking forward to that.

Look at the back...

plenty of hydrocarbons to be messing with the plastic are present. Most of them evaporate at like -100 degrees C but i believe that when over applied they dissolve the plastic

Jig-a-loo shouldn't have petroleum in it next time you should read the back and if it has petrouleum you should not because it does the petrouleum eats away the plastic that is also true for silicone you should be carful.

Not true for all lubricants, Crzyazn, only all aerosols. Aerosol contain propellants, and propellants eat plastic. It's not a huge danger because most of the propellant evaporates before the spray hits your cube. You're more at risk if you use the little straw and spray directly inside your cube, but lots of people do it and I haven't heard many complain about major damage to their cubes.

Personally, I think aerosols are really bad for the environment so I prefer a liquid lube. I use cube lube (Johnson's Shine-Up), which can be purchased from Rubiks, PuzzleProz or CubeLube.

I've also tried silicone oil and had really good results, but you have to use it very sparingly because it doesn't dry like cube lube does.

thanks for stating what i already know...

I was talking about the propellants....

and thanks abbracadiabra, a lot of useful information there. Now my cube will smell strongly of citrus ;)
