Hi, my name is William Wilhelm, also known as IV. I'm 22 years old and I've been a part of the yo-yo skilltoy community for around five years. If any of you frequent the Yoyonation forums for yo-yoing skilltoys, you might already know me seeing as how some of the guys there are into speed-cubing. If not then I'm happy to be a new part of this forum.

I've had an old standard Rubik's cube for about three or four years now and of course they were all over my childhood but I never really got interested in solving one well until yesterday. I started with the beginner's method and learned some of the basic algorithms, even though I don't know 100% of the algorithms involved with the beginner's method yet. I'm still learning.

Anyway, I'm interested in getting a new cube as I practice and I've done quite a bit of research into what people are interested in these days. I've heard people chant:

"BUY TYPE C!"
"BUY TYPE C!"
"...TYPE C, YOU INGRATE!"

I've also heard people chanting about type F and A but I've heard some recent news over the Ghosthand cubes and they are the ones I'm more interested in seeing as how most reviews I've read have had nothing but good things to say about them.

What's this forum's take on all of this? I already have a Ghosthand II in my cart at one of the online shops and I"m willing to buy but I'd really like some good input from people who have been in the speed-cubing hobby long enough to know their stuff.

welcome =D.. what do you average?

some cubes I recommend

Haiyan memory/Alpha 5
GuHong
F-2
C-II
GHII

try some of these and decide which one you like :D

Good luck!

I average around 2:30-3:00 using the beginner's method but I hope to learn F2L soon so I can take my methods up to a much more impressive time.

The best cubes on the market right now are:

GuHong
F-II
A-V
Haiyan Memory

Right now, I wouldn't worry too much about getting a speedcube. If you really want one, go for it, but you can easily, easily get a whole lot faster with your current cube.

You may get some more useful information in this thread (http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20726) over in the hardware section.
But don't worry too much about it. Getting any type of non-storebought cube will be useful for you for a long time. Cube type matters more and more as you get faster, but right now I wouldn't worry too much about getting 'the wrong cube.'

EDIT: What Chapuunka said.

Honestly, I can't wait to get a speedcube, this thing locks up on almost every turn and sometimes makes the puzzle more frustrating just moving it than doing the puzzle.

Not to double post but to put the topic in "new post" mode as an update but I've decided on the A-V, I'll also be modding it with some sandpaper into a Haiyan Memory cube using sandpaper that I use for yo-yo modding and refinishing.

Thanks to everyone who put in a good opinion. I can't thank you enough, I'll be around the forum quite a bit from here on out through my cubing journeys.

Another way to mod it is with a blade, like a utility knife or something. It's just easier, I don't know how the results differ though.

And for future reference, you can click the "edit" button to the bottom right of your post so that you don't have to double post.

He was intentionally double posting, so as to bump the topic. I think it was appropriate in this case, to give an update and thanks.

I'm not sure how good the A-V is without lubrication but you will probably need some. I would recommend jig-a-loo or CRC heavy duty silicone.

Would a hardware store be a reasonable place to seek such lube? It's silicone only, right, so it doesn't damage the plastic?

Wal-Mart is where you can usually get CRC.

Now before I buy, people certainly rave about type F II cubes, from the ghosthand reviews I've seen, it's consistently been compared to F-style cubes.

Is there any reason to choose one over the other?

OH!
and where should I buy this thing? I've noticed some reviewers talk about knockoff brands... is there a place where I can get the orignal Shengen brand?
Possibly cube 4 you?

I think most people would agree that an F-II is better than a Ghosthand.

I gotchya, but mostly between the three I'm looking at, the A-V, F-II and Ghosthand, it really comes down to preference, yes?

There's no real better or worse at this point?
One review did mention that an F-II would make a wonderful beginner cube... and being that I'm a beginner might mean that it will work well for me?

Look up badmephisto on YouTube and watch his tutorials if you haven't already.

F-II is very good and the Dayan is heavier yet cuts corners extremely well.
