Hello everyone, I'm Robert Barnett and I've been cubing for some time now. I realized the beginner's method wouldn't get me far (I average around 50-55 with it), so I started searching for other methods.

I found out about the Fridrich method but I decided not to learn 57 algorithms (and that's only for the OLL :(), so I've choosen Petrus.

A typical Petrus solve takes me 1:30, and I've been using it for a week now. Seeing as I don't want to learn anymore algorithms (no 2-Look either), would it be possible to get around 30 with just Petrus F2L and beginners OLL (R U R' U R U2 R') and PLL (A perm once or twice) + the other edge swapping thingy by just practicing?

Being able to average 30's my only goal. What's the best option to achieve that without having to learn anymore algorithms?

Come on! 2 look is like 12 cases, and you know some of them already. You can lean it, don't be lazy! ;)

Agreed with jacdexter75 and jiggy. 2lookoll and 2lookpll are very easy to learn. Few algorithems that are easy to remember. And the beuty is that you can learn full Pll (and eventually full oll) later if you want to go even faster.

And to improve f2l, watch this tutorial if you already haven't:

It helped me alot.

Good luck

It's technically only 7. =P Which makes the point even stronger
I'm curious which algs you're counting...

3 EO algs (just 2 really)
7 CO algs
2 PLL algs (or 6 actually)

Either way, none of the algs are hard and as we're agreeing with each other there's really little point in quibbling over numbers! =P

EDIT: Petrus does away with the EO algs, so for get those!

I seriously don't see why you shouldn't go with 2-look OLL and 2-look PLL.
I had a 35-40 second average with this method.

2-look OLL is 7 cases, 4 mirrored (sune/antisune and chameleon/double sune) which makes the algorithms far less and easy to learn.
2-look PLL is 5 cases, 2 mirrored (a-perm)

Point is, you don't need to learn the 51 cases for OLL and 21 cases for PLL in order to be fast.
I never learned the 51 OLL algorithms and I am not far at all from being sub-20.

You can optimize your OLL method to make it similar (but a bit slower) than 2LOLL. Learn the 2 edge orientation cases (F RUR'U' F') and (f RUR'U' f') which are practically the same alg, and you can look at the Pathway to Sune and figure out if you need to do Sune or Anti-Sune and you'll only have to do Sune a couple times (but there are only 7 OCLL's...so it just makes more sense in learning them). Don't forget that Sune and Anti-Sune can be sub1, so that's a 3 second OCLL :P

I am a bit confused on your interpretation of the Fridrich method. You are using Petrus to solve the F2L but the "heart" of the fridrich method is which she solved the F2L at the same time usine corner edge pairs. There are 42 (somebody correct me?) cases to learn with that method, but it is extremely intuitive (most advice is to only learn the optimal algs for the bad cases). Although your Petrus adventure can get you some CFOP (Fridrich) advancements, as Petrus method fixes bad edges.

Sorry. I forgot we were talking about pll's too. I was just speaking in reference to oll's

If you use Fridrich with Intuitive F2L and 4 look last layer, it's only, like, a dozen algorithms and it's EASILY possible to sub-30 with it. I use 4 look and I've had a good number of sub-30 solves already.

You already know a lot of OLL from beginners last layer, so just bite the bullet and do it. If you focus you could learn all the algs in a couple of days.

Considering you DON'T learn a lot of algs with beginner last layer.

??? Not quite sure what you're saying here. Are you saying it wouldn't help him at all with OLL or that he has to learn a lot of algs for beginner?

Either way, he already knows how to orient last layer edges, so if he wants the lowest number of algs possible, he only needs to learn the algs to get the corners oriented and a few PLL algs.

Just suck it up and learn 2 look OLL/PLL it will take you a lot less time to learn those than get to sub 30 without it. By being lazy you just make it take more work to reach your goal.

@jackdexter, I said what I meant by that is he already knows how to orient edges, aka, he knows half of 2 look OLL.

After 4LLL, you can just do full PLL which is 21 cases total. After that, you've basically got all the potential to reach sub 20ish, which is a great time. With 4LLL, you can get sub30 times usually. I've only cubed for about a month (one or two hours a day) and I use 4LLL. Currently, I average about low 30s so you could achieve this easily too. You really don't have to know all 57 OLL cases unless you really want to advance your times, and only time will tell if you will choose to do so.
