Hi, I watched the movie "Pursuit of Happyness" where Will Smith could solve the Rubik's cube. A few weeks later my son got a Rubik's cube because he said he really wanted one. He's 6 and I told him he probably wouldn't be able to solve it since I had never solved one or knew someone who could. Well, I decided to learn from Dan Brown on YouTube how to do it. Then it's all downhill from there because I was hooked.

I have been lurking around these forums, I watch videos from the 5 awesome cubers, I've got the V-Cubes, and I'm about to put together a popbuying order to get one of each type of 3x3x3 (excluding type B) to see what kind of cube suits me best.

It seems like a nice community and it's neat to see many famous cubers hang out here and post.

Just get an FII and a haiyan memory xP

Nice introduction. The addiction part sounds very familiar. :)

I am also fairly new to cubing. I had a Rubik's cube a long time ago that I never figured out how to solve. This past year I saw a Rubik's cube in a toy store and thought it would be a fun, cheap gift idea to put on my Christmas list. A little nostalgia and a Christmas gift later I was trying to figure out how to solve a Rubik's cube again. My store-bought cube came with a tips pamphlet that taught me the beginner's layer-by-layer method. And just a few days ago I placed my first order with Popbuying which will expand my collection to include an FII, Ghost Hand I, Mini QJ 4x4x4, and a Lan Lan 2x2x2 when it finally arrives. My wife says I've become obsessed.

I often read through this forum and see all the experienced cubers out there. It makes me question if I can even call myself a cuber since I'm still a few seconds shy of a sub-60 time. So it's nice to still see new people getting into it. So welcome, from another "new guy"!

to be honest. this is probably the best solution to finding the cube for you. I don't care what people say about FII and AV cubes since I'm still in love with old Type-A and AII.

also remember to explore other methods too :3

Thanks for the tips on which cubes to get. They don't really cost all that much, so I figured I'd get them all and try them out -how else will I really know? Here's the current order I'm thinking of placing with popbuying after much research from the wiki on what type of cube is what manufacturer:

10.99 HaiYan - HaiYan 3x3x3 Magic Cube 3d DIY Kit Black 28303
10.74 Type A-V - 3x3x3 GJ Magic IQ Test Cube Component Pieces 5th Gen Black 25261
7.62 Type C - 3x3x3 GB Full Sealed Magic Intelligence Test Cube Black 27438
4.35 Type D - 3x3x3 YJ Magic IQ Test Cube Full-Sealing Gen 2nd White 26822
4.20 Type E - 3x3x3 DS 110g Magic Intelligence Test Cube White 27397
7.35 Type F-II - 3x3x3 SE Magic Intelligence Test Cube Black (Gen 2nd) 27101
5.51 Ghosthand - 3x3x3 GS Magic Intelligence Test Cube with Pouch Dare to Do 26651

I know the HaiYan Memory is the modded A-V and it's all the rage, but I'll probably get some factory cubes first. I'm also kind of on the fence about getting the FII and the Ghosthand since I read they are sort of the same type. Also, I know most people say DS are junk, but it's $4.20 so how can I go wrong?

I'm in the same boat as you Tarpshack in regards to the wife not quite understanding the new hobby. I told her I need to have a shelf for all of my puzzles, but I don't think she wants to see a row of cubes on the bedroom wall. HAHA.

Thanks again everyone for the greetings!

Welcome, this site is amazing, when I first joined my times were horrible however, through the help of others I have improved quite a bit although, compared to 99.999% of the cubers on this site my times are still horrific :-)

Be sure to use the help function and as you progress, make sure and visit the wiki, there are many alternatives to algorithms so you have plenty of options.

Of course, look up badmephisto and thewestonian among others for good tutorials.

The original ghosthand is a knockoff(KO) of the F I not the F II, F II is better hands down IMO(hasn't degraded on me yet)

I did sorta the same thing when I got big into cubing....now I sorta want one of each type just to collect :p. Grab a 4x4 on there too if you dont have one yet(I prefer the mini QJ). I'd say drop the YJ(Type D) and go with a different Type A. Type As vary so much between models its a huge difference. I got an A I, AIII, AIII-f, and A V, and none of them feel similar at all.

Welcome, Zarlor!

I managed to get my wife to learn beginner Fridrich, and she'll shock our friends from time to time by picking up a cube and solving it. Good times.

Getting a variety of cubes is a good idea...even if a cube sucks, it's kind of nice to know *why* it sucks, when you have other cubes to compare it with. And with new designs emerging regularly, it's a fun time to be a speedcuber.

FYI, Ghosthand is nothing like F or F-II. Totally different feel.

I actually decided to buy both the FII and a Ghost Hand because they both got high marks for being smooth and, more importantly, quiet. I swear my wife can hear my cube from anywhere in the house, and I don't think it's that loud. Right now I have my cube displayed in a stand on my dresser. I think as the collection grows it might be better for me to put them in a drawer. :D

I noticed you had a Ghost Hand I in your list, and I thought I would point out that Popbuying now has a Ghost Hand II.
3x3x3 GS Full Sealed Fingertip Dancing Magic Cube 2nd Gen Black
They got it in the store just a few days after I placed my order for the white Ghost Hand I.
