I need help with the first step of ortega, making a single face of one color.

My move count is apparently way too high. I thought I had been doing alright, but then I found this thread which says one face can almost always be solved in 4 moves: http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showpost.php?p=152726&postcount=14

If that's true, then I feel really stupid.
For the case where 3 colors are matched on bottom, and then the remaining corner is on the other layer facing in the opposite direction, it takes me 7 moves just to solve that one piece (or 8, QTM). Can someone tell me a better way to solve that case?
And, is there any solver that can give me the optimal solves for a face? (can I do it on cube explorer?)

And, it would be great if someone could post a few scrambles with solutions for the first face :)

This is a great tutorial. It's what I learned from.

U R2 F' U' F2 U R' U Green front/white top

Solution for one face:

y x' R' U R'

R' F2 U F2 U F R2 F R2

Solution:

z' R2 U R'2

lolno. 4 moves to solve the first face assuming you're color neutral and find the most efficient side to solve. Not 4 moves for every first face case you may get.

ya color neutral helps a lot
We just need to find the easiest face to complete
sometimes it is possible to finish both the top and bottom face with same moves...like solving the Square-1 corners.

Yea I am color neutral. My point was that even for seemingly easy cases, like where 3 pieces were already done, I wasn't solving efficiently.
Though I doubt those stats on that page would change much even if color neutrality wasn't assumed. I wonder what the absolute worst case could be.

Hopefully you can get sub-5 ,good luck:D

sub-4 is possible with Ortega. tps, look ahead and recognition are all important. try to remember the bottom layer permutation and look ahead to see OLL in the 15 second inspection.

For the case with 3 stickers done and the 4th facing the opposite way, put the empty spot at DFR. Then if the last sticker is at UFL do R2U'R2 or if it is at URB do F2UF2. If it is in one of the other 2 then do a U or U' to AUF to URB.
