UCSD competition 2008 Results

wow, the bld results are crazy :). 3 people within 2 seconds.

Yeah, 2 seconds was particularly close, but those California BLDers all seem to bunch up together pretty close in every competition they go to. Shelley has finally caught up to the others, and Dan is getting close now.

I need to work more on my 3x3x3 BLD. They're embarrassing me over on Ryan Heise's competitions now. I've been in dead last place the last four weeks in a row. :(

Mike, care to tell us your average of the 3x3 BLD?
I'm working on my first successful solve and might need some personal help. If you can hook me with someone who explains thing well, I would greatly appreciate it :)!!

I recommend chatting to Joel! I don't know how you could manage that, he used to be on stickam a lot, but I don't think many people go on anymore these days...

Oh crap, I've forgotten to enter the heise comp and practice BLD for way too long, lol.

Are you sure you should be spending time on the Heise sim instead of the actual cube? :p

Perhaps he was referring to this? :)

I was. I've actually not spent time on the Heise sim (other than a couple of quick pathetic tries) - I'd rather use a real cube. The sim is really nice, but I'd just rather use a real cube.

As for my average, it's pretty weak - my best average of 10 is just 3:45, but I typically get around 3:20 these days. Typical memorization for me is about 1 minute, so most of my time is spent in the solving phase.

My execution is almost lightning fast(for corners, cannot solve edges yet), but the memo kills me, because I use numbers for corners.

I still use numbers for corners; there are only 8 corners - how bad can memorizing 8 digits be? It usually takes me 10 to 15 seconds to fully memorize the corner permutation. Or maybe you're trying to do orientation and permutation in one step, in which case I'd recommend letters instead of numbers.

No, just 8 numbers..
But replacing the corner if it solves it self(which almost always happens to me at least twice!) really kills me.
I'm not good with random strings of numbers, just letters.

Oh, yeah, that's the problem with always using the same buffer location. Except when I'm trying to use Chris Hardwick's method with commutators, I use Macky's method, and you don't bother with fixed buffer locations with Macky's method, so you don't have to worry about replacing the corner when it solves.

I can see where that bothers you.

If you're good with letters but bad with numbers, why not just use letters A to H for your corners instead of numbers? Actually, for multi-BLD using Macky's method, I've been using A-L for edges and M-T for corners, and that has worked pretty well for me.

If you can memorize everything in 2:00 which is not that hard, and execute in 30 secs, that's still pretty fast.
