What's a competition like?

I've only been to one, but it was really cool. I think my favorite part was first walking in and hearing the sound of a whole room full of cubers clacking away on their cubes. I went to the 2007 San Diego competition, and didn't horribly when compared to everyone else (averaged about 53 seconds - Leyan Lo got just over 10), but still had fun.

Funny I should read this post today... I was really pumped about going to my second competition today and had to miss it because they did it on a Sunday. I'm pretty actively involved with my church. I hope there will be another reasonably close one soon on some other day of the week.

If you like cubing and get the chance to go to one, take it :)

I come home with a headache and the want to never hear a cube again after every competition. :p

Otherwise, it's worth going to at least one, for the experience, if anything.

There are reports posted by people all the time on competitions:

Basically, you travel to where the comp. is, cube a ton before, after, and during the competition. There is a schedule of events that will occur and you typically register for them. It is pretty easy to follow, and very fun. Happy cubing.

It... fun? You get you meet up with people and just cube the whole time. You get nervous when you go up, and that may screw up your times, but eh. It's fun :).

Indeed it is fun. Note to Corwin: Don't get nervous at Standford! You have to beat me this time...

I'm kind of new too, and the Stanford competition is, hopefully, going to be my first. One thing though, do they sell cubes at comps? I want to get a DIY and I don't want to order one online.

Do you want to use it in the competition afterwards? That's not a good idea, they are usually very crappy from the beginning, it takes at least one week for them to get fast.
But to answer your question, you can usually buy a lot of cubes and other puzzles at competitions
