what did YOU do when approaching sub 30?

well, learning the easy OLL algs first might be worth it. they're so simple. on a side note, do you remember your algs by muscle memory?
I do. Can't even write down the algorithms I use.

haha. Whenever someone asks me how to do a certain case, I completely screw them up, since I don't even know the notation for the algorithms I use anymore.

Muscle memory is the key. To learn an alg though, I simply make the moves following my cheat sheet over and over until I can not look at it. Then you'll start to see the colors move in certain ways so you'll get somewhat of a visual memory of it first. Then after a while, you can do it without looking with muscle memory. This is what you want so that you can see a case, perform the alg by muscle memory so that your brain can be looking ahead for the next one.

For sub-30?
Uhm, I used a CFOPish method:
Cross, middle layer, FLC (First layer corners), 2LOLL, and most of PLL.

The F2L suits me well. It's 2-gen with cube rotations.
I was learning full PLL, but I stopped learning that when I started getting back to Roux.

Yes it's possible to have sub-20 with 3LLL. I think I'm sub-20 and I use 3LLL. Too lazy to go study OLLs :P

I did like 1 per day but it depends. Sometimes you can do more because there are algorithms that have similar move sets like the G-Perms.

Well, I'm sub 24 with a 3 look last layer. It took me a LONG time to learn full PLL, I started June 30, 2009 and finished December 26, 2009, nearly 6 months! I think I was just to lazy learning algs.

I would say 2-look OLL is very important for sub-30, as it really helps with consistency. Only 7 algorithms to learn, and odds are you know a couple already. By the time I was sub-30, I used 2-look OLL and I knew most useful PLLs. Learn cases that are common and figure out a good two-look system. R-perms and N-perms are really good for a ton of cases, almost always getting it to a 3-edge cycle (if not solving it). Also, for F2L (and everything else), PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
