Will anyone ever come out with a better method that is widely recognised to be faster or more popular than Fridrich F2L + OLL + PLL?

More popular? No, Fridrich will forever be known.
Faster? I believe there are already methods in existence that are faster than Fridrich. They (the methods) just haven't been perfected by an individual down to the level Fridrich has.

I voted yes but your question is not correct.

Will there ever be an official world record using another method than Fridrich (alowing for small variations like LL-edge control)?

No, there will not. For all the reasons that has nothing to do with math, but all to do with humans.

The many methods seem to be within a range.

You have the beginners method which has amazing recognition and is fingertricky, but a very high move count.

When you compare it to full ZB, there is a low move count but also low recognition and often difficult fingering. It just takes too long to realize which case you have.

Different cubers are suited to different locations on this spectrum. At the moment, it seems that the fastest cubers seem to find equilibrium in full findrich.

Some cubers like Breandan seem to be slightly more on the fancy trick, hard recognition while Erik seems to be slightly more the other way.

Other methods like Roux and Pertrus have low move counts but are not so fingertricky. So I guess it depends on the cuber. You may see a person getting faster times with other than Findrich but that person would have to have amazing recognition.

I think full Findrich will be the best for at least a long long time. The ZB guys need to catch up pretty fast.

This.

TICT easily.
Nah i don't think anything will become more widely used than Fridrich.

Is this a method and would it be good? cause I've thought about it for awhile now. Make a double x-cross (or cross with 2 f2l pairs) then insert the next pair and orient all edges at the same time. Then on the last pair orient corners also. Then do pll.

Please tell me this is sarcasm. (MGLS)

Nah, it's not MGLS and I'm not making a thread about it unless I actually cared which I don't that much. MGLS does it all on the last pair and I think that is a negative because the split of the last pair i think would probably be slower than some intuitive/alg edge orienting on one pair and winter variation.

3rd slot would be ~863 cases and 4th slot would be ~505 cases...sounds fun.

Ouch! Really?
OHw8! I meant using VH cases and adding a view because there is a 5th edge and Winter Variation cases.

Almost every idea that people post now has been thought of, sometimes people just don't post about it (I never make topics about my ideas). I've seen the one about orienting edges with the third pair and orienting corners with the fourth on the Yahoo group. The idea was only presented as a way to solve differently from the usual way, it wasn't really meant to be faster.

Then that's 1 more step than Fridrich :/

There is no full fledged method that will always work

Fridrich is
Cross, F2L, OLL, PLLL

A person would have to learn a combination of multiple methods to achieve the highest standard of speedcubing

I'm reminded of discussing if sub 15 averages would ever be possible, not many years ago.

This is still a very young and small sport. If it keeps growing everything we find amazing today will be swept away by some very smart and dexterous people of the future.
