Hi Everyone, I'm really new to cubing and i was wondering

I got a black Cube4you DIY cube for my christmas present, and when i assembled it, i found it popped alot, because it was far too loose, so i tightened it, and it was not smooth or fast at all, i spend about 1 hour trying to get the tightening perfect, and it didnt work!! So i decided to have my cube set to the tight setting and yeah.

Shall i just bung some silicon spray on it or is there a "cuber trick of the trade"

Thanks

Freddy.

My cube was like that too but when I used silicon spray that made all the difference. I did it the long way spread all the pieces out and spray them individually and wait 10 minutes then turn them to another side.

Well, I'm from http://www.sgcubers.com, a Singaporean who is new to speedcubing. We order our DIY cubes from cube4you, so I can give you some help. Although I don't have a DIY cube, I still have discussed with the guy who orders from the website and he explains much of it to me, and I['m also interested in buying one.

For the tension part, our guideline is to screw the screws until you can't see the screw threads anymore. I suggest if you want to loosen the cube, try not to unscrew too much and make sure the amount unscrewed is uniform. You can apply adhesive to fix the screws to prevent it from changing the tension.

If you do want to apply lubricant, Please take note that too much and your cube will be too fast and lose control. Normally, I don't think there is any need to lube a DIY cube as it is loose enough already.

well u cant make a diy cube PERFECT so its loose and never pops..

my diy cube was loose....but popped rarely... Just do R R', L L', U U' and so on..

you will kind of know when its too loose...

so.

1.tighten all the way
2.do 1/2 turn to unscrrew each screw (too loose->1/4 turn tighten)
3.if its still tight keep doing 1/4 turns untill its perefect..
4.break it in for 2 weeks mabey.
5.silicone it.
6.ENJOY!

Which diy kit did you get?

Silicone is the way. They don't usually come that smooth, save for the new diys, but even those tend to pop; though perhaps not as frequently. For the first version of the new diy, it was really stupid and popped almost every turn and the cubies never aligned well. Then after I lubed them two days ago, I let them sit for a day, and when I put it back together, I found that I'd have to agree with those people who said it was amazing. However, it seems so effortless, that if you try to move too quickly and force them, they will still pop; even if tightened all the way.

I don't want to start a new thread or something, but if I don't have more silicon again, what should I do? Does it help to to sand it, and how do I sand it? Just throw it in sand? I can't ask my dad each time I have no more silicon.

Silicone isn't too expensive... For me it was under 2$ for the can so you could just go buy some. And you sand it with sand paper...
I have a DIY type(a) old and it locks up and pops all the time when I use both hands... but that is because I have it set very loose for OH cubing. I think you can see two or three threads of the screw I have it so loose. But I have the new type a in the mail to make my OH cube and this old type a to be my regular cube. I think it will be very good and smooth when it is tightened.
Oh, and I have lubed my cube "the long way" before and it was almost too smooth I had to wait a lot of solves for it to wear off for it to be good again.

Does the method of lubing make a difference? I have found that using the short way I can still cube fast, but my cube seems to turn much better if I don't lube it at all...

Sub 20 on an unlubed cube? I'm interested in seeing what happens if I actually lubed it properly :P

I have a short question to go along with this, and was already touched on a little. Would others recommend spraying silicon on every piece of a new DIY kit before putting it together? Mine should be here soon so I just wanted to see what everyone else thought. I did do this to my store bought cube and it helped, but I'm not sure if I should on the DIY.

I would break it in first.

Well, the best way to get all the pieces in one session is to pair up the edges and have the one sticker facing downward and the other facing the sticker of another edge. This way, all sides are exposed, so you only need to spray them once. Then, for the corners, you can just put them into groups of 4, which also leaves all sides exposed.

Hi Guys, Just a quick update

Yeah, so i bought some silicon from my local store, i've come back, taken everything apart, sprayed it on all angles (except for the sticker side!)

Its great!! I didn't have to break the silicon in at all! Absolutely amazing!

I ordered the type A cube, but when it came, it only had caps for the corner pieces, nothing else.

Thanks guys!

only caps and corner pieceS? wOWW return that man....

also dont you juggle?

Unless you got one of the new types the corners are the only piece with caps... (except obviously the center caps)
Unless you mean like it didn't come with springs and screws but seeing as how you call it amazing I'll assume all that is there.

Yeah, I juggle :)
And yes, it came with springs and screws, center caps and corner caps, all the pieces and a core thats all.

Whatever the case, its really good!
