How many hours of breaking in would it take for a storebought to be able to cut corners well, and turn smoothly?

How long would it take for it to feel like a DIY?

It's easier to lube before breaking in.

edit: Wait, I worded that wonrg. it's easier to break in after lubing.

pestvics method is key to life

If youre referring to the way he "breaks them in" It really reduces the overall lifetime of the core to storeboughts.

If youre talking about how he turned a storebought into a DIY, I'd agree with you to an extent. (I wouldn't use Type A core/screw/spring, but back in 07-08, there was no c4y core/screw/spring)

lol.

It mostly depends on the storebought and its condition, but here's what I do.

1) Get a storebought cube and see how well it turns.

2) Pry out an edge piece and fill it with a good amount of sand.

3) Work it in for about 15-20 minutes.

4) Thoroughly wash out the core and pieces with a mix of hot and cold water, strain, and dry.

5) Assemble the cube, and see how well it turns.

6) Work it in for roughly 3 hours total.

7) Wash cubes thoroughly with soap and water. Get out ALL the sand that might be stuck in the core, if any remains. (optional)

8) Disassemble the cube, and do 2-3 sweeps of your preferred lubricant. Mine is Jig-a-loo.

9) Move all the cubies around for a few seconds to make sure it doesn't stick.

10) Quickly assemble the cube, work it in for 2-3 minutes, then do 4 solves.

11) Let your cube sit in a secure area for at least 1 hour. (I let it sit for 2)

12) See how well it turns, and then scramble/solve it for an additional 4 hours..

Result = VERY nice cube with stickers in moderate conditions, turns well, cuts corners forwards (R') about 20-25 degrees, and nearly glides..

OR...

Sand your cube with the method above. Wash it and such, then work it in for at least 24 hours total. Wash, lube, now you have a win cube.

1. NO SAND!!!!!
2.Jig-a-loo IS FAIL USE CRC

LUBRICATE THE CUBE AND JUST USE IT
CLEAN CUBE DUST OUT WITH RUBBING ALCOHOL EVRY SO OFTEN AND YOU WILL BE FINE

I think it took me maybe a few months with the help of WD-40 with my first storebought. I took me only a few weeks with another storebought which has the japanese colour scheme and flat centres. WD-40 is good for storeboughts IMO, but too much is, of course, bad.

I bought 2 Rubik's brands in "hex" packaging. My first one took several months to break in.

I am still breaking in my 2nd Rubik's store bought after many months of use. I like the fact it does not pop and the colors are easier to see than my other cubes. It was pretty smooth to begin with, and with just a little lube it was very good. Even though I know CRC will slow down the wearing process, I lube it because I enjoy using this cube so much. I have dozens of DIY cubes, but they might pop and explode if my friends try to scramble them, or if I catch an edge when trying to twist fast.

Once the Rubik store boughts are broken in, there is hardly any spring action and they still hardly cut corners. But they still pop less than DIY cubes and do not have much friction. That's fine with me, especially if I want to bring a cube in public.

I also have a non-Rubik store bought cube that has always been way, way too tight since I bought it. Not enjoyable. The stickers quickly wore out and I put cubesmith colorblind stickers on it so I can do BLD with it in places that have bad lighting. It is bad for speed. I have no idea if that cube will become un-crappy.

Just open the package when you're in the store, feel how good it is, then put it back if it's bad or take it if it's good. Problem solved.

Geez, all I have access to is JigALoo since my Walmart's decided to stop stocking CRC or something crazy. And if you don't have sand, then too darn bad. If you can't, then it's your problem.

Wow. Both of you sound like the new generation cubers.

Anywho.
1) Pestvic's method shortens the lifespan of a storebought
2) Sand is alright, but shortens the lifespan of a storebought
3) CRC, jig-a-loo, BLEH! It's all up to personal preference. I prefer jig-a-loo, but CRC gets the job done as well. Reason, the smell of jig-a-loo isn't as bad as the smell of CRC in my opinion.

and lastly

4) the amount of love you put into a storebought will make it better.
