Start suspending people who blatantly disregard forum rules.

Also, I think this would deter potential newcomers from entering the cubing world. As if it wasn't already intimidating enough entering such a competitive community, now they would have to worry about whether or not their question is worth asking or if they would sound like a "noob" asking it. Also, I think banning them would only make them reconsider asking questions in the future.

I do not think this would be the case. I believe it will only make the newcomer research more, thinking about what they are asking. When they have searched for the answer and can not find anything, the outcome will be a well thought out post unlike the 5 second process of, "OH GOT QUESTION POST ON SPEEDSOLVING", that a lot of the posts are becoming.

I totally agree. Personally, I actually have done research before asking questions to make sure that there is no other alternative. Now, usually there was an alternative that I just failed to locate, but I always make sure that my questions are worth asking before making a new thread. I starting doing this after I was called out on a noob thread I made when I just joined. It made me re-think what I needed before asking to make sure it made sense and was an appropriate and logical question.

Brunson:
Excuse me for being a few decades behind; the world atlas I usually refer to is still from the 1970s. I still use the abacus. I still use my dictionary from the 1980s. Most of the things I own are older than me and that's ok. Cell phone, even telephones, do not really exist for me. Electric lighting isn't really necessary either. I would not use cars either if my parents would let me. I'm probably the opposite of most cubists. I don't care so much for fancy technology. This is probably the reason I haven't bought a V-cube yet; they are too new.
I think I just did a bad job of pointing out what Bryan was able to do more succinctly. You were focussing on the letter of the proposed rule and not the spirit.

You're a really nice kid and a great contributor to the forum (definitely one of the better), sorry if I'm older than you and have been participating in online forums so much longer than you. Just as you shouldn't have to apologize for being young, I don't have to apologize for being old. I'm sorry your statement irked me, but it made me bristle. There's a big difference in being concise and being lazy.

Sarcasm thereby ignored.

So you are saying you want to make your life harder for yourself?
Sometimes. That could be a reason why I do FMC. I could try myself and come up with a 30 move solution in an hour or enter the position in cube explorer and get a 18 move solution in a minute.

Brunson:
Sorry for being off-topic. I'm quite sure why I made that post. I think I was just skeptical that he could tell someone's age simply from a few words. I acknowledge that it was not a very helpful post. By the way, when did you become a moderator?

On topic: This discussion really has to do with “who are cubers?” Anyone who can solve a cube or people seriously interested in the cube? I am agreeing with Phillip ideologically for now. These new rules could intimidate new comers. The people who make pointless posts will be thick-skinned and keep joining. The people who are thoughtful may become scared to post relevant and interesting threads or adding useful information to old threads. I'm seeing cubists dividing into several factions. Most of the old active members here are genuinely interested in cubing. The newer “chat speakers” or “youtube monkeydudes” seem to have a more shallow view of cubing that involves impressing others. Ideologically, I want to keep it open and have everyone around; but I can also see how some of these posts annoy people.
This suspension idea can work, but make sure not to abuse it. Bans should be used sparingly.
Maybe we can have a court sub-forum where one can accuse others of improper forum usage then a trial can be set-up and the ban can be determined by a poll. This can be a way to make bans more fair, but it would make the forum too serious and unfriendly. Perhaps we should just keep it the way it is. Current moderators should just ban people silently at their discretion.

I definitely agree that redundant/stupid posts are posing a threat to these forums and that bans or probation's are needed. However, I feel that everyone is ignoring the harsh word use of some of the users who respond to those redundant post.

Look at most posts which are considered to be "stupid"; within a few pages you will more than likely find a user directly calling the original poster an idiot (or another similar word). To me, this seems to be just as bad, if not worse, then the posting of the redundant thread. I do not get how anyone can feel the need to directly attack someone that they more than likely have never even met. I feel that these people should be given the exact same probation/ban as the original poster of the thread.

That's just my two cents :)

Trust me, everyone is not. I'm far less annoyed by the redundant posts than I am about the mean replies.

I do agree with this, which goes back to that moderation in moderation thread. It is way more appropriate to ban people for being prickholes than to ban someone for using "u" instead of "you" or bumping an old thread.

The main reason that people say "u" instead "you" is because it is quicker to type

Well for me anyway

And that is exactly the point. We are glad you are starting to understand. Stop being a lazy prick.

You are a really nasty person
If you want me to put it nicely

I was thinking about the three strikes rule. I think it should be like this and I'm sorry if this has been talked about:

Strike 1) Stern warning

Strike 2) Suspension of 3-4 days

Strike 3) 1-3 month suspension

Strike 4) Ban

I know it isn't three strikes, but i think it would work. And of course, it depends on the case because some people make more mistakes than others and it takes them longer to learn from.

You're still being too specific. They key word in any decision on punishment for someones behaviour is "discretion". There is no need to have strict system that applies to one and all.

I do not like any kind of strict ruling like this. It should all be determined by the severity of each individual case(as said in a previous post of mine in this thread).

I thought everyone knew that. Well, congrats for figuring it out, anyway... Now perhaps you are advanced enough to learn about periods :D

I guess if your typing speed is like 10 wpm, it makes sense to save two letters at the expense of readability and any chance you had of looking intelligent. But how could you be so impatient that the second or two it takes to type a *short* word properly is a serious drain on your time? Besides... how dumb do you think you look if it looks like you can't even correctly use one of the most simple, common words in your own language? (I'm using the general you here, not talking to a specific person, by the way). It honestly does look to me like many of the noobs here have an intelligence on par with someone born with severe mental retardation. As a general rule, it's always easier to get help if you don't insert an implied "I'm really stupid, durr" after every word of your post...

Well for me anyway

- When I talk about a competition I've been to, it's easier for me to not include the competition name, because it takes a while to type out. Someone can simply look at my WCA profile to see my recent competition.
- If I'm asking about a puzzle, if the algorithm makes it obvious which puzzle I'm talking about, I'll omit the name.
- If I'm talking about a cuber that has more than six characters in their name, I'll just refer to them by the WCA id, minus the first two characters, because they can be inferred by the 3rd and 4th.
- If I make a YouTube video, I won't bother to edit it, because it's quicker for me to just upload. People can just wait to get past me pausing and whatnot.

See? Just because it's easier for you doesn't make it a good idea.

That addressing a cuber by 2 letter thing could work with the last names. Well, for most probably.
