I timed myself doing both methods..
I got the following;

AvG:

1:48
1:49
1:42
1:43
1:45

Big Cubes:
1:43
1:36
1:38
1:32
1:39

I suppose I'm faster at Big Cubes.. but my look ahead just really isn't that great, and AvG seems easier on lookahead.. is there anything to help me decide between the two or is it just completely personal preference?

And while we're talking about 5x5.. I also timed my centers..

0:49
0:51
0:52
0:48
0:47
0:53
0:52
0:51
0:56
0:48

So my breakdowns are 0:50ish for centers, 1:35ish for edges, then 3x3.. My center times seem really long don't they?

Anyone else have breakdown times to post to compare, or comment on mine?

Pick one and stick with it. Toying between 2 methods isn't going to make you any faster. Personally, I think bigcubes has the best advantage for lookahead unless you are Erik. As for centers, they are a little slow, but you aren't that fast at solving yet. Just try turning as fast as possible, and speed will come eventually.

BTW, my breakdowns are like <25-<40-<20 on an OK solve.

Thanks Dan - I was hoping you of all people would respond..
And I suppose you're right .. I'll just stick with Big Cubes I think.. Although learning AvG did teach me some new things about 5x5 in general..
As did your 5x5 walkthrough vid- That was VERY helpful, thanks for that :)

And your breakdowns do seem about the same.. your edge times are just under double your center times - like mine - if that's a good comparison, idk.

I still need to lube my 5x5 too, that should help.. right now it feels like a workout after solving it a few times

5x5 is now lubed..

Edge times:

Statistics for 06-12-2009 17:19:23

Cubes Solved: 12/12
Number of Pops: 0
Average: 1:28.44
Standard Deviation: 10.15
Best Time: 1:11.05
Worst Time: 1:44.70
Individual Times:
1. 1:12.41
2. 1:30.91
3. 1:29.47
4. 1:32.70
5. 1:11.05
6. 1:44.70
7. 1:37.11
8. 1:38.92
9. 1:31.34
10. 1:24.23
11. 1:32.53
12. 1:15.86

Lube helps apparently :)

Using Big Cubes method btw ~

Centers didn't improve for whatever reason.. even though edges went down by 20+ seconds in some cases >_>
