Well...I don't know where does this post fits...

anyway, I've been checking out the wca rankings and I found out a few weird profiles...where those participants only participate in some categories...and achieve good times on it...but they do not participate in normal 3x3 events or so...

Takao Hashimoto (Japan) http://www.worldcubeassociation.org/results/p.php?i=2007HASH01

Only participated in megaminx, square-1, rubik's magic and rubik's master magic...but not 2x2~5x5..

Kazuhito Iimura (Japan)
http://www.worldcubeassociation.org/results/p.php?i=2008IIMU01

Participated in his first square-1 competition and got world record.. but his 3x3 speed 25.95 average.. Square-1 speed faster than 3x3..

Yuttana Suputthayangkun (Thailand)
http://www.worldcubeassociation.org/results/p.php?i=2009SUPU01

Only participated in square-1... and national record for thailand square-1..

Haiyan Zhuang (China)
http://www.worldcubeassociation.org/results/p.php?i=2008ZHUA01

World record 3x3 blindfold.... but he treat 3x3 speed category as blindfold?

My question : Are these people trying to be special or something? Or do they think that if you can't get records..then there isn't any point of participating in that category?

From my point of view....going for a competition needs money...transportation,food,time...? maybe have to skip your work or school just for it... but why participate in just few categories? is it worth it? *maybe I feel it is not worth it because it is rare to find competitions at my area*

Please give comments... thanks :D

I don't see any thing wrong with not competing in events that you don't enjoy. Just because you are good at or like square-1, does that mean you have to be good at and compete in 3x3 speed? I can solve a cube with one hand, but I've never entered an OH 3x3 event. I'm pretty sure Takao just likes to travel with his family and only competes in what he's really good at. Haiyan's speed solves have been talked about on here also. He practices blind during his speed solves because he's super awesome at blindfold, but gets nervous at competitions. And look, it really paid off for him. I don't think there's anything particularly unusual about anyone you listed.

Note also that in most 2-day competitions, the side events are on Saturday and the main events are on Sunday. If you see someone competing only in side events, it may be because he can attend the competition on Saturday but not on Sunday.

Here is a large but not exhaustive list of people who have competed in events but never succeeded at 3x3 speed. (Can someone provide an exhaustive list?)
2004CARR01
2005ALDR01
2005HUNT02
2005KENN01
2005STIL01
2006BAOT01
2006BIRC01
2006CEAU01
2006CHAN06 <- I remember this guy, he was at my first competition where I did OH for the first time and then competed in it, and I totally owned him anyway
2006SCHI01
2007BERE01
2007COMP03
2007FILS01
2007HEAT02
2007LUTH01
2008GREW01
2008GUNJ01

And here is one guy who managed to get all DNFs. Fail.

Not only that, his WCA profile does not reflect the fact that he entered the BLD event without actually knowing how to do BLD. After his first attempt we figured out that he was wasting our time so we disqualified him and didn't record his results.

P.S. Takao is awesome.

hmm...actually I did not meant that the people that nvr join 3x3 but join other categories...is just that the few ppl I listed are actually pros... but they do not participate in normal 2x2~5x5 and stuffs..

the ppl u listed participated in other categories but they do not have excellent results in that category..

If someone does do a list, separate out the people that only do Magic. Many siblings might only do Magic to give them a chance to compete in something. My daughter would probably be very sad if Magic was no longer an event (until she learns something else).

very true...I never thought of that all the while...magic competitions can influence younger age ppl to start puzzles solving...since it is the easiest one..:D

OMGZ PEOPLE!! I had to post this somewhere but didn't want to make a new thread. Takao is doing 3x3 speedsolve at SD open?!?!

http://caltech.cubingusa.com/sandiego2009/list.php

After 20+ comps with no 3x3, he will finally do it... unless it was some sort of mistake. Does anyone know what that is about? I was unsure if I was going to go to the SD open but I think I will have to go now just to see that.

I think the participation in only 4 events (w/ no 3x3) for the first guy (too lazy to check name) is because at some events they have a competition limit. Nakajima lamented this after Erik got the average WR-he was doing 4x4, 5x5, Megaminx, and something else at some competition, but couldn't do 3x3 because of a event limit of 4.

The other guys...uh...yes

....wrong.....

Simply checking the results for any one of those 20+ competitions would have ruled that idea out. I don't think a ANY of those comps had a 4 event limit. And do you really think that all of them had megaminx, sq-1, magic, and master magic?

I think everyone has the right to participate in any event that they like but I personally like top participate in as many events as possible, infact I like to do them all. My times are not that fast but still I love it

I'm only aware of one competition that has ever head a strict limit on the number of events you do, the one you're referring to with Nakajima. Correct me if I'm mistaken. Though US competitions in particular don't have that rule. Takao generally competes in a large percentage of US competitions, on either coast or in between, which hold square-1 as an event.

If its not a mistake, I see two possibilities:

1. He didn't have a 3x3 before
2. He wasn't very good at 3x3 before. He is really good at the events he has done.

Or maybe something else I have not thought of.
