Gathering Feedback | SpeedSolving Forum Awards 2025

Apologies for anyone confused/annoyed by the bump-

Just to get ahead of the game for this year's forum awards, I think we should collect feedback from the past years awards and perhaps decide on a member(s) to host for this year.

A few notes based on the latter:
  • The host or hosts of the forum awards should ideally have been active on the forums for multiple years
  • Be of a decent level of maturity
  • Be willing and able to set aside time for the administrative parts of hosting (something i was, admittedly, unable to do as was busy with exams, etc. leading to the results being posted somewhat late into 2026)
I also noted that the naming of the 'in honour of' awards is quite outdated and is in need of reform, so suggestions for that may be useful.

I wasn't planning on hosting this year, however, if a sufficient candidate isn't found then i'm happy to step up as host for a second year running- although it would be nice to let somebody new host who is more active on the forums than I have been.

Just some final notes- i think the posting of the thread should be no earlier than December 2026, and we should have a set timeframe for what counts as 'this past year,' as some of the nominees for the categories probably shouldn't have qualified for them.

Again, sorry for the bump and feedback is appreciated

I could volunteer to be one of the co-hosts. I have been a member since early 2023, and want to partake in the awards. Some other notes.

Imo, the in honor of awards seem fine to me and are not outdated. Mike is still active today, Brest was active recently enough to my knowledge, and was a former mod of the forums. As for the other two, doing quick looks at previous forum posts, Bruce seems to be legitimately smart, and though I did not find many wacky things from my (quick) search on Kirjava, not too many crazy things, but considering that they are one of the members with the highest amount of posts, they seem to have genuinely made some impact on the forums. Out of possible replacements, I think xyzzy is the only replacement I would be comfortable with, Bruce, though seems to have real accolades, also seems to be nowhere near recent (I did not hear about him or facts about him before today) and xyzzy was a winner of his category. At the same time, I would also be fine keeping Bruce's name for the time being.

I think the posting of the thread should be from December 2026. Nominations could be open from then, until roughly January 8th 2027. This slight extension into January gives enough time for people to nominate very last entry posts that come in on December 31st or something. To clarify though, that does not mean first week of Jan 2027 posts can be nominated, the Jan 2027 days are just to give extra time to nominate 2026 events.

Something else I was thinking about, though everything else should ideally be for things within only 2026, I wonder if we could give a bit more time for best newest member award? It would be a bit sad for a really good new member to not be considered because they joined in Dec 2026, too early to make an impact and demonstrate why they should be considered the best, but too late for next years awards, assuming that it is limited to members who joined in 2027. If for this year's awards and succeeding years, we make the new comers eligible if they join in Jul 01 2025* or later (*year changes depending on year of awards), it should give everyone at shortest 6 months 1 day to demonstrate why they should be the best newcomer. They could still be disadvantaged to someone who was on the forums for 18 months, but I think the difference between a range of less than a month vs 12 months, vs 6 months and 18 months, is a more fair playing field.

Edit: the reason I think the newcomer award could be extended is because unlike other awards like for posts or threads, the newcomer award is given out to an actual person, and unlike other awards for people, there is only a limited amount of years you could be nominated for best new member

Yeah, I think it should be a group of 3 tbh as it allows for some people to be busy and any events that could happen.
Also 3 people means it wouldn't nearly take as long.

I think 2+ years is a good baseline, although I think that however much active they are over the course of the year should play a bigger part.

Not the 52 million 9 year olds, Id rather not have an age minimum though cause age is just a number when it comes to this (DO NOT TAKE OUT OF CONTEXT).

And nothing to say about last point other then if you have exams or smth you shouldnt.

The he who mogs award (in honour of me ofc) JOKE BTW JOKING
the debater one could be in honour of aj or smth cause they are probably the best known for debating

I think that some general guide lines should be that it has to of happened in 2026.
However I think something such as best new member or related stuff should allow 2025 accounts (especially if they were late 2025) as it isnt likely most nominees made in 2026 were actually here for a significant portion of the year.
Again, sorry for the bump and feedback is appreciated
No worries

I had you in mind- i think you would be a great candidate.

If the general consensus is that they are fine as they are, i don't think they should be changed, however my thinking was that the names of the awards (aside from the Mike Hughey award) don't really mean anything to the community.

Agree on all points.

This makes sense to me. Perhaps the 'newcomer' award could be rephrased to be an award that acknowledges a member that has become active in the community recently, as opposed to joined the community recently. For example, Fred joined the forums in 2007, however only became active 2024 onwards.

Agreed. The group format worked well this past year, as @Justincubes was able to handle all of the nerdy spreadsheet stuff whilst i handled the organisational aspect of things.

hmm

I know you're probably joking here, but in my experience people who claim maturity usually lack it entirely

Almost goes without saying
