Edit (August 2026): A lot has shipped since this post. Recording gallery so you can save and rewatch solves, multi event scrambles (2x2 through 7x7, pyraminx, skewb, square-1, megaminx, 3BLD), sessions, a solve time graph, and a mobile version. Swift also works without a webcam now. Keyboard mode on desktop, tap mode on phones, if you just want a normal timer. Most importantly, there's a training playground with two modes so far. Ghost racing gives you a live countdown to your PB while you're still solving. Daily scramble is one scramble a day, same one for everyone.

Original Post:
I'm a software engineer. I got back into cubing recently. My younger brother used to train pretty seriously, but he only ever used a keyboard timer. We never owned a stackmat growing up, so he never got to practice the real hands off motion you need at a comp.

That's what got me building swift. It's a free browser based timer. It uses your webcam and hand tracking to copy the WCA comp routine. No stackmat needed. No install. Nothing to download.

How it works:
  • Press space to start the 15s inspection countdown and get a new scramble
  • Put both hands palms down to get ready
  • Grab the cube to start the solve timer
  • Put both hands palms down again to stop the timer
It follows WCA rules where it makes sense. 15s inspection with voice cues at 8s and 12s. +2 at 15s. DNF at 17s. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing leaves your device.

Here is the link to the website. Here is the link to the demo on Google Drive. (This is actually my younger brother lool, I am too insecure to post my solve)

I'm still actively building this out. Would love feedback, especially on how the gesture detection feels when you try it. Happy to answer any questions about how it works too.

One more thing I'm working on. I keep seeing people share their solve recordings, so I figured a built in way to do that could help instead of using a separate screen recorder. I'm building that right now. Curious if people think that would actually be useful. Also, let me know if you would want a mobile version.

mobile version would be really good. for example if you’re on the go and wanna solve at acafe or so then mobile wouldnt be so bad, i wouldnt be carrying a laptop around just to do a few solves on the go

AMAZING!!! It reminds me of the YJ pocket timer. I am so impressed, thanks! I LOVE THIS SOFTWARE!!! Thank you for making this. I would love to have an option to scramble for 2x2 or 4x4, etc., but again, this is amazing.

Thank you!! Yes, the mobile version is being actively developed right now, I'll keep you posted when it's ready!

5x5 would be the best one (totally not biased because of you jared)
It is already up now!
