Recently I switched to Yau for 4x4, but I am somewhat struggling to learn Yau for 5x5(Yau + Freeslice), particularly the 4 centers after cross edges. I understand cross edges, freeslice, and last 4 edges, but I haven't found a good explanation on how to finish centers without breaking cross edges or being extremely inefficient on 5x5. Any recommendations for tutorials or help would be much appreciated.

lol, you have succumbed to the light side.

Ciaran Beahan is a great cuber and a great source for advice/tips on Yau for big cubes

Most of the time someone takes a big cube ER from Tymon, it's Ciaran

(except 4×4... Sebastian Weyer is a kinda beast there)

Here's a link to his videos for Yau on his YT channel:

Yeah, I used to use Hoya for both but I realized I should probably switch eventually.
Hoya has a lot of the same happy jazz going on with it as Yau does...
but there are a lot of prominent cubers/YouCubers who do Yau so the reources to learn about it are out there more

Off the top of my head I know Shawn aka SpeedCubeReview does Hoya
and he has a video or two on it...
Probably some links to Hoya resources in the deacriptions of his Hoya videos, as well as here on SS on the wiki pages

Juliette Sebastien uses Hoya, but no tutorials.
Elijah Phelps uses Hoya and has a video on "why i use hoya and why you should too", but not a real tutorial about it.

For centers on 4x4, you always move the cross edges out of the way of the empty slot before changing said centerpieces, right? When you build centers on 5x5 with Yau, try to build the center bar, and try to build your second bar without breaking up your cross edges. In doing so, you can build the second and third bars and insert them. Then move the center out of the way and start the next one. The key to not breaking up your centers is to do turns that don't move that solved center into the center you are currently trying to solve.
i.e., you are solving the orange center after you solved blue, and you have a piece on the top center you want to insert. Try to do it as simply as possible, while watching your other pieces around it to make sure you don't break any solved pieces up.
Kind of long-winded, but that's my take.
