Here are some hard positions for face-turning octahedron puzzle (or "FTO"), searched from this February to July.

Below are length-23 positions found so far, for normal(pseudo) FTO configuration (=centers on a same face can be mixed):
 Twizzle link
//tri_adj + edge_opp
U F U' B' BR' D' L' D' R L' R BR U' R D' BR F R' F' BL U F L Lv

 Twizzle link
//tri_adj + edge_adj
U F BL B' U B' BL BR' D' BL BR L R BL' D R F' B U' BL B' U F' Rv'

 Twizzle link
//tri_adj - [Uf Fu; Db Bd]
U F D L' D' U' L BR' U' B' BL' R' D L B D' BR BL D BR B U B Rv

 Twizzle link
//tri_adj + [UB FD, NL MR]
U F U' L' BL B U' R U' D R' U D BR' F BL' U' R' B R F BR' F Uv'

Below is a length-21 position found so far, for edge only scrambled position:
 Twizzle link
//edge_hard
//(*also optimal for pure configuration)
U' L BR' BL R' F' R BL' D R' BL U' D BL' R B' F BL' R' F B'

Below is a length-24+ position known so far, for pure FTO configuration (=centers are all unique):
 Twizzle link
//pure; corn_6flip [≥24f*]
U F' U' R' L' R L U F U' F' L' R' L R BL L F' L U F' R' U R' BR' U B BR' B BL BR' D' BL D'

is it possible those difficult positions are solvable in less moves if you tried to do them in another orientation, since an FTO doesn't have a fixed centers if you do outer layer moves? or did you already take that into account
