WCA Competition Experience

My first wedding WCA comp and second cubing at a wedding experience:

An amazing experience attending the reception of the OG cuber and the torchbearer of Indian cubing Sachin Arvind!

The event was well managed as there were a lot of experienced cubers, unlisted delegates and former delegate helping out during the few hours the competition took place.

There have been previous crazy comp ideas implemented in south india, like the chennai beach comp and boat house comp and this comp provided a novel and fulfilling experience.

Honestly, the best part was the food as it was high quality and served in banana leaf making the south indian wedding experience perfect.

Waiting for the other south indian organizers and delegates to get married so that I get to relive this experience.

Sachin-Yasheka forever ❤️ ! Congratulations to the lovely couple.

Kevin Hays was at my first ever comp. Seeing him solve a 6x6 in 1:20 while I was struggling to do a 5x5 in that time felt very surreal
I've been at a few comps with Kevin and he's always been great. First comp I went to with him was right after he was on a game show and we talked about that, along with the "Hays 6" that ended up never coming out. He's also supposed to be at a comp I'm delegating in a month.

Competition #109 experience, Big n Blind March Bengaluru 2025:

Super happy to visit the nice venue in BLR for side events and big n bld for the second time. Huge thanks to Janma wellness people for enabling two competitions a month.

Komahal and Vivek Mada have done amazing things for the community and have selflessly arranged these competitions and encouraged new cubers to try WCA events, other than the standard and popular sprint events.

Always my pleasure to compete here, I cannot wait to return to Janma again for my next BLR comp. A PBQ comp in other city does not have the systematic and beauty that these comps have. The schedule is highly optimised and everyone has a good time.

Bengaluru is one of the busiest place for WCA competitions just after California with a bunch of small scale and big scale competitions.

Hats off to the efforts of Vivek Mada to make such a puzzle loving community. No where else in India does such depth in cubing exist and the close knit exist.

I wish this post corona format and roadmap of BLR comps to continue. That being said the Bheja Fry and Brain Studio comps pre-corona organized by the Mada brothers were one of my favourites to see too and attend if possible.

I hope world class cubers emerge from this healthy speedcubing competition/ meet-up environment.

Competition #112 Korum Cube Challenge experience:

This is the third competition held in the Korum mall, which is located in Thane, Mumbai. This is the second competition of the year organized by Team Cubenama who are very good with event management and delivering user experience to speedcubers and especially first timers. The pro of having a competition in a mall is that it gives access to common people to spectate solves and get to know about the speedcubing world by asking around. In a mall, there are also clean washrooms for everyone, air conditioned and huge space, and shopping and food activities for the parents to kill two days' worth of time. Red bull also sponsored this competition and there was a nice display of cans of Red bull at the centerstage. The lighting of the competition was better than last year with no sunlight and shadow problem. I guess the time of the year was better suited this time.

The scrambling area was just one station beside the huge stage instead of two in the last edition of Korum comp. The stage and the banner were made a few feet wider giving this edition of the competition a grander feel. There was more space to move around between stations compared to previous korum and pheonix mall comps in Mumbai. The provision of 4 air coolers throughout the day was much needed as the mall's therostat does not operate at full capacity till 11 am, and the cubers are not left competing in hot and humid conditions for 3 hours this time. The schedule was well designed and the volunteering duties were well managed. There were no issues with the operations of the competition for both the days.

I appreciate the philosophy of the organizers to hold regular quality competitions to engage and build a quality and long-lived speedcubing community in the region. The trophies were high quality as always and the experience of spectating the finals was one of the best in the country. I am looking forward to the next high-quality comp in Mumbai. The incentive for the organizers is still not well established as WCA does not have a mechanism to appreciate the quality efforts of the organizers and it becomes a thankless job which is hard to sustain. It is magical that team cubenama have been able to do thankless high-quality work for 10 years for the Mumbai speedcubing community.

Congrats to Aditya Bareja and Pranav Gadge for breaking 4x4 and OH NRs with some quality results which is world class as well. I missed interviewing both of them, but I will catch up with them at the next competition. This comp was special for me as it was the last leg in my 10th competition in 10 weekends crazy journey that I decided to do this year.

Feedback for the organizers is to include extra round for 5x5 next time. Also include 2 out of the 4 blindsolving events would make this event attractive to the blind folks actively practising. I personally prefer the Raymond comp over Korum and would love to see more comps happening at that venue.
