how do tymon (and others) not get arthritis

I mention tymon in the title because he has said he cubes every waking hour. but it may apply to other obsessed cubers too

how do they not get arthritis?? I have to limit my cubing because I get pain in my right hand. I also do a LOT of coding and typing so that probably contributes to the pain
arthritis is just something that can happen. youre thinking of RSI or carpal tunnel.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a local inflammation closely linked to diet, which can be the consequence of a diet too rich in carbohydrates, seed oil, and anti-nutrients contained in plants. Not everyone is equal when it comes to anti-nutrients, which explains why some people experience symptoms more easily than others.

I cured my rheumatoid arthritis by adopting a ketogenic diet. It's a type of diet whose benefits are too often ignored by medical doctors, even though thousands of studies have been published on the subject for over a century. Fortunately, many doctors are talking about it on YouTube and elsewhere, and are themselves practicing this diet for their own well-being.

There are also truly ergonomic keyboards and keyboard layouts, designed to avoid pain. Such keyboards are developed and sold by Dygma, Kinesis, MoErgo, X-Bows, and ZSA, to name but a few (in alphabetical order). If you use keyboards intensively, you should consider buying one. They're expensive, but well worth it. And they're fully programmable.

As far as keyboard layouts are concerned, there is an interesting resource to consult:

Cubes are very smooth nowadays.

Maybe if cubers in 2012 followed this life style they would have gotten carpal tunnel in a year or two.

Also people who play piano and violin are at more risk of nerve damage than cubers.
bro don’t make me worried that my nerves might get damaged after practicing piano too much😭😭

piano and violin playing for decades might cause some trouble.

Also it depends on your schedule, intensity of playing etc
There is no major nerve damage that will be happen but yeah some aging effects do creep in once we are 50+

In my experience cubing just exacerbates whatever pain was already in my hands, but it's worth nothing that if you turn with the pads of your fingers that can cause fatigue and soreness; turning with your fingertips instead is ideal
Are you sure your typing ergonomics are fine? As an example resting your wrists on the table as you type can mess with your carpal tunnel, so setting up your desk to promote healthy typing posture could help mitigate a lot of pain. worst case scenario you could invest in an ergonomic or split keyboard as mentioned above

This. I’m not sure who needs to read this, but it’s extremely important to know. I have close family members and friends who suffered from RA and were able to be genuinely cured by improving diet, and not by taking pain meds or anything else prescribed. Wholistic medicine is not always magical, and there is a lot of nonsense online (including actively harmful things), but there are genuine solutions and remedies that traditional doctors won’t prescribe. Even just adjusting your diet and deliberately exercising/strengthening certain muscles will solve more issues than people realize.

I think top level cubers are smart enough to know that cubing all day everyday can be pretty harmful to the body. That’s why this thing called “breaks” exist: to let the body cool down and “remember” what they learned before. Also idk if you saw Tingman’s vid where he raced Phil, but I think they were playing Pickleball afterwards, with Tymon destroying Tingman and Phil. I think that was one of Tymon’s breaks, although I could be wrong.

Iirc, in a cubicle video about 2 years ago, Tymon mentioned how he played racket sports with his dad. It is nice to see Tymon improved

I have wondered if - when WCA might offer advice regarding this.
i have wondered about long term effects of cubing.

i have to stop because of discomfort (older than most y’all)

still, even for liability (disclaimers or release forms during events ) i’ve wondered if WCA would / could make recommendations

on reddit in a thread a while back all kinds of links / recommendations were shared to try and mitigate discomfort / pain.

breaks
breaks are very important.

I type on a Dvorak keyboard layout and have been doing so for pretty much my whole life. The stress on your hands, fingers & tendons is far far less.
Yes it is true that this means the letters on the keyboard have nothing to do with what letter they actually produce when you hit them, but once you memorize the layout that doesn't matter.
I played violin for 8 years when younger. So far luckily no arthritis.

ngl I probably have awful typing ergonomics. I do a lot of typing sitting in weird positions. I just get bored sitting upright in a chair
related I got back pain from playing osu or Factorio for too long. The expensive steel case chair helps a lot but it's mostly about not holding a rigid position too long and stretching in intervals
