DIY Core In A Store Bought Cube?

Hi, I have one of those early 2000s Rubik’s brand cubes which feels soooo smooth. It was my first cube and it still has its stickers... they were the good pvc no clear layer types. This era of cubes is awesome.... Mine has been sanded and has about 8 years of usage… perfect smoothness.

Except... now I have a bunch of Type 1 (a), a few Diansheng and some other cubes from cube4you and my old cube never sees any usage. It’s just plain too tight compared to what’s available now.

I would really like to resurrect it so I thought I'd ask about this.

Does anyone have any experience replacing a store bought core with a diy core and screws?

I have some yellow type A cores and screws but I'm weary of tearing in to my cube... it was my first cube and I definitely don’t want to destroy it.

If any one has any tips, tricks or experiences with this please let us know.

Thanks!

Warm regards,

Chris Brown

I'm pretty sure you can just remove all the cubies from the storebought and put them in a DIY with all of its cubies removed. I don't think you can get the original centers, however, (unless you want to use glue and a knife).

Also, try to refrain from beating Rihanna. ;)

That should work. You will probably need to use a key or knife or something to get the first edge out of the storebought though.

*I hope you aren't the real Chris Brown. :p

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll give this a try ASAP. I have a type 2 (a) that I don't use much. The centers will be white but if it works I can always order a black cube to use permanently. I'll post my results.

As for the name… LOL

I'm in a band and the audience always gets a kick (no pun intended) when we announce the musician names. They announce me as the non wife beater Chris Brown lol

I always say that I am the real Chris Brown and he's just a singer. I used to be #1 on Google for the terms Chris Brown and Chris Brown Guitar but now I'm not even on the first page. =/

Talk soon.

Kindest regards,

Chris Brown

Alright... I put my old store bought cubies on a type 2 (a) core and centers.

This feels pretty good.

It's a lot nicer than it was with the type 2 cubies. It locks less and feels like it is going to be pretty stable.

Very smooth... not hard and slick like a type A cube but smooth... Sanded store bought cubes have a smoothness that I haven't felt with any of my diykit cubes. Diansheng is close to the smoothness of a sanded store bought but it's still not the same.

The center cubies are a little bit larger (maybe 1/32 or 1/64 inch) than the store bought.

For my style almost anything is better than a type ii (a) cube which I nicknamed "click click lock" ... I hope that some day the online cube community can adopt this pet name for type II (a). :p

Time will tell how bad it locks up with the oversized centers but honestly it doesn’t feel like it’s going to be a problem. The white centers with black cubies are a little bit strange.

I'll try an old type A core+centers later on... if they fit better then I'll order an extra specifically for this purpose.

Awesome!

Thanks again for the help.

I would just leave the centers with the core because it is a real pain to get them off and once you do, I don't think it's possible to get them back on. But using the storebought cubies with a DIY core is nothing new. I've heard of many people doing that (Erik does it) and they make very nice cubes. Definitely worth a try.

Of course he's the real Chris Brown, just not the one your thinking of. How could he be a fake Chris Brown when that's his name?

EDIT: Oh you already tried it. oh well haha

Hey, thought I'd post a follow up about my cube. I had the type II (a) core and centers last time I posted. The centers were a little bit too big so I tried one of my type A (old / 1a) core + centers... that was better.

Then i found pestvic's video on modifying a rubik's brand to have screws/springs.

http://www.5min.com/Video/How-to-Mod-a-Rubik-Cube-Part-2-79727041 (same as his vid on youtube but this one has audio)

This worked out nicely for me. Seems a lot like the type A centers but smoother... more like a store bought but loose and fast like a DIY.

I used a yellow core, springs and screws from c4y. I had to cut about 1mm off of the springs to get the right clearance for a good hold.

Any way... I'll be doing this to my other non vintage store bought cubes when time allows.

Thanks again for the feedback. Much appreciated!

LOL, man, there are too many Chris Browns. Before the singer there was the running back... I was always able to top him on google... not the singer though. Now I guess I need a new name LOL.

In high school there was another Chris Brown... He got called to the discipline office all the time for things that I had done. :p

guys, you know:

storebought cubies=rubik's DIY cubies

storebought cubies+rubik's core+rubik's screw&spring set=rubik's DIY
