There were two different old style formats pre 2010s:
1) 15 minutes per cube for the first 6 cubes, then 10 minutes per cube for every cube after that. I find 15 minutes per cube slow, since MBLD has gotten a lot faster now.
You were ranked first by whether you got n/n, then by number of cubes solved. I find this point system unfair.

2) 10 minutes per cube uncapped and you were ranked by the current points system which is points = total solved cubes - total DNF cubes

I propose a more competitive format where a final score is calculated based on solved cubes and total time. Number of DNFs do not matter while evaluating. 10 minutes per cube is not part of the equation or constraint.

For starters, an example formula could be
Score = (time in seconds)^-1 x number of solved cubes

Whether or not to give equal weightage to time and number of solved cubes in the equation is a matter of debate, hence this thread yo.

We have a similar scoring system for Speed Fewest Moves. I think the experiment of actually doing Speed Fewest Moves has shown us that this sort of scoring system feels a bit artificial and arbitrary. I think most people have concluded that the event wasn't nearly as fun in real life as it seemed like it would be based on the concept.

I have a feeling that the same would be true with multiBLD, although I admit I could easily be wrong about that.

Also I assume you'd want the score to be proportional to number of solved cubes and inversely proportional to time, so perhaps you mean more like:
Score = number of solved cubes / time in seconds
??

Score = number of solved cubes / time in seconds is better, sorry my bad.

I understand speed FMC has not been popular as it should have been, because of the artificial score. I guess some more real way , single number method of assessing solved cubes and time should be found out.

What a ridiculous idea. No one would ever attempt more than 2 cubes under this system.
With that scoring formula, you're right. The somewhat interesting challenge would be to try to find a formula that balances things such that this is no longer true.

The thing that I think would make this unsatisfying is that such a formula would probably seem very arbitrary and weird.

I gave an example, no need to ridicule an example.

I kinda prefer number of cubes^4 / time in seconds

Gives more motivation to do more cubes, although there might be an upper limit for number of cubes, which defeats the purpose of old style.

A non algebraic formula or some sort of exponential could also be a valid idea.
