My friend recently got a Magic. It seemed like a pretty nice puzzle, and the way the "joints" just disappear and reappear is pretty cool. But he said that at the competitions, it starts from exactly the same place every time, and it's the same exact solution every time.

Is this true? And if so, how is this a puzzle? Is there something I'm not aware of?

But there are other configurations possible, right?
Why not just start it from a random place instead of the same place?
That would be like giving everyone a 3x3x3 with with two layers already solved or something.

The problem to date has been a lack of an adequate scramble generator. I'm convinced it's possible to write one, albeit very difficult. Perhaps you're up to the challenge? :)

Because at some point you'd have a scramble where the person had to simply do a single flip.

To make a 3x3 with 2 layers solved isn't hard...
Just reverse the scrambles for pll and oll.

He means a magic scrambler.

Of course a LL scrambler isn't hard, here's one, http://pjameson.awardspace.com/scrambler/LL.pl ;)

My point was that in magic the challenge is gone, it's the same move every time.

Okay, go break a world record then.

I don't own a magic, or have much interest in it because I somewhat agree with your argument. But I kind of see all puzzles that you go and search for a solution to be kind of the same. You do the same thing over and over, and try to get faster. Even on 3x3, sure it's not exactly the same every time, but you will never be surprised by anything you encounter in your normal method, nothing will ever make you stop and go "Huhhh? how do I do that?". You can do it all without thinking. 2x2 is even a better example, I only know a few algs for it, it is not in the least bit challenging, the only challenge it brings to me is how fast I can do it. Magic is all about dexterity, which is a big part of speedcubing. Have you ever done a PLL time attack?

it is true. and, quite frankly, it's really not a puzzle in competition.

The challenge is not to solve, but to get faster. Just like any other piece of plastic that we call a 'puzzle'.

...which is basically summing up what Ellis said.

It's not a puzzle. I'd love to try to FMC a magic.
It's just a fingertrick. PLL time attack should also be an official event if magic is.
