How much of the Rubik's cube could you solve before you learned how to solve it?

My biggest regret in cubing was not trying to solve the cube on my own. I was able to get the white cross done but not in the right spots but then I looked up a tutorial *smh*

You could try other puzzles (like JPerm did). Or maybe the 15 Puzzle. Was thinking about it too, but the idea of breaking up parts and put it back together to find out algorithms will always be already there and not my own.

Yeah. I’ve solved a few on my own including the 15 puzzle. I also solved the floppy ghost cube, Ivy cube, skewb, and pyraminx on my own. Nothing beats the original though

I solved the pyraminx and megaminx on my own but the skewb is like alien technology lol
Yeah. The skewb was tricky. I think I remembered reading something about sledgehammer being used to solve it so i kinda just spammed sledgehammers until I figured out what it did to the cube and then I figured out the U perm.

I solved the entire 3x3 when I was 7 years old with no help, no books, no videos, and no tutors. That was in 1982.
In 1987 I made my fastest single which was 19.8 seconds. At the time I think only a few people had solves faster than that.
In a different & similar thread I posted the method I created & used in 1982 which required no algorithms.
