Can you post some photos of it? Sounds like you had a piece pop, which isn't uncommon with Square-1.

Core stripping is when the screw ruins the plastic that the screw goes into. I suspect the main way this happens is if there's no lubrication between the screw and the hole the screw goes into. If there's no lubrication, the screw being turned (whether through adjustment or use over time) will likely remove bits of plastic because metal is a harder substance than plastic.

I actually figured it out, it was just the core which broke, which isn't much of a problem but i'll probably buy a new mgc squan later

Yes. Square-1s aren't difficult to reassemble - a little harder than 3x3, but easier than 2x2 (yes, 2x2s are harder to assemble than 3x3s).

I do it for most of my puzzles, except for my MGC 4x4 and 5x5 as reassembly for those (especially 4x4) can be tedious. Although that said, I might do it anyway. As far as 4x4 assembly goes, Cube Solve Hero has the best tutorial for that:

- it uses the technique I figured out on my own, which is different to nearly every other existing tutorial out there that requires one to build the core as the first step (which is incorrect, in my view).

Lubing this part doesn’t change whether or not it will strip. Doing this just leads to a higher chance of it unscrewing. I advise against doing this since I believe it doesn’t help.

On what basis do you believe it doesn't help? Do you have evidence that lubricating the threads will increase the chance of the centres unscrewing and that it doesn't reduce the chance of stripping a core? Lubricating threads is standard practice in bicycle maintenance.

You lubricate a screw/nut if you want it to more easily come lose again. Why do you think the threads in the lead screws of lathes/mills/whatever are lubed up?
It technically will help against stripping the nut because the nut won't wear while the screw unscrews.
There is also a difference between screws thst get tight and ones that stay floating.

Bottom line. Buying a nylock nut is still the best option after stripping the core. Or getting the Volt. Mine came with a nylock

If you mean move-optimal, you probably don't want those. I had a quick look at speedcubedb and the algs don't look good. Best to refer to the Square-1 Resources.

Not exactly move-optimal, because speed-optimal is most important of course. Thanks for the resource!
