How do you actually average 5 seconds on 2x2? (using ortega)

So everybody was saying that I can start averaging sub 5 seconds using ortega so I learned it and I have done about 300 solves and still barely average 8 seconds, so how am I supposed to average sub 5 seconds? by that I mean do I just have to practice more, do I have to learn another thing etc. so can somebody please tell me how they did it?

Plan the layer. Start trying to predict OCLL. Drill your algs.

LOL. I use Ortega and probably have done over 10,000 solves and I average about 6.5 seconds. But I guess I'm really old, so there's that. 😄 I do have the fastest official WCA average in the world for solvers over 60 years old, for whatever little that's worth.

Ability to get to a speed will always differ somewhat from person to person.

Make nice faces (5 moves), Drill your algs so that they are easy to execute, and stop pausing. I don't see a real need to predict oll tbh

yep to be 5 sec you don't even need to predict anything. just remember where the bottom face bar is and learn to two-side recognize the top face bar
I got sub 5 with ortega and didn’t plan anything except the face except occasional pbl block predictions. Yes you should hold the block in the front unless the pbl is in the back

I have been having the same issue. My PB is 3 but that was because I had an OLL skip and a very easy PBL and first face. I average around 8-10 seconds. I’m sub 12. Wouldn’t call myself sub 10 since I still get many 10 or even 11 sec solves. I have solved 2x2 tens of thousands of times.

I average like 9 seconds and I have done just as many solves as you. I’m a sophomore in high school so age doesn’t have much to do with it 😂

1. Plan at least the first face, and make sure to also know the permutation, that way PBL recognition = PLL recognition
2. Try to plan the OLL (note that 3 pieces decide the LL case so you only have to trace 3 pieces)
3. Know PBL algs from different angles
4. Use good finger tricks

Only step 4 should be enough, even to get you sub 4 if given enough time, but the others surely help you improve.

if you want more personalized advice, post a typical ao5

Is it better to plan an "bad" first layer?
I think the Algs for the last step are shorter the less of the sides are solved after OLL

With Ortega I prefer to not have a solved fist layer and end up with a T-Perm or Y-Perm.
But in the moment I'm not so far to plan things like this. I usually use the side that is easiest to solve.

What i mean:
If you have a full first layer, you can get these Cases (with the Algs I use)
Adj (T-Perm); y2 R' F R' F2 R U' R' F2 R2 (9 Turns, even more with 3x3 T-Perm Alg)
Opp (Y-Perm): R U' R' U' F2 U' R U R' D R2 (11 Turns, , even more with 3x3 Y-Perm Alg)

If you have one bar in the first layer you can get these:
Adj-Adj (2 bars): R2 U' B2 U2 R2 U' R2 (7 Turns)
Adj-Opp (1 bar): R U' R F2 R' U R' (7 Turns)

If you have no Bars in the first layer you can get these:
Adj-Opp (1 bar): R U' R F2 R' U R' (7 Turns)
Opp-Opp (No bar): R2 F2 R2 (3 Turns)

So it's better to have no Bars or even a full layer if you solve the first layer
There is one exeption: There are no chances for a skip this way.
Maybe this compensates the advantage of the shorter algs because this is the shortest 😋

I assume by "bad" face you mean face instead of full layer like in LBL. As long as you keep track of where the bottom layer bar is, that's fine. I don't like doing the 2x2 opp alg but 3x3 J perm alg is very fast to execute on a decent cube.

Sorry, ik this thread is a couple months old but I was wondering how good the QiYi QiDi is as a 2x2? I use ortega and average around 8s. I've seen a lot of advice on this thread to get a good cube - is my cube (the QiYi Qidi) bad or am i just turning badly? For example I can do a T perm in under 1s on my GAN 356 XS but it takes me 2 or 3 seconds on my 2x2.

Idk anything about the Qiyi Qidi but you shouldnt use a T perm for that case, but R' F R F' R U2 R' U R U2 R', and a T perm should be sub 2 imo.
Ye I'm looking to switch to more efficient algs for 2x2 - just finished pbl so drilling those first.
I know T perms should be sub 2 my point is that is this a sign of a bad cube or bad cuber?

Well if you can do it sub 1 on the gan xs (nice, im not the only one who still uses that cube) it isn't your fault ig. I got recommended the RS2M Evo, apparently it is a good 2x2 and it's only 10 Euros (idk about dollars, probably about the same). I'll see how it turns out once I actually get one.

im still sub 8-10 with ortega and what i usually do is plan the first layer during inspection, saves alot of time, and also t u r n i n g f a s t

Pure ortega

All I did was to plan first face during inspection, and the OLL I was gonna get.
Just make sure you can execute all your algs regripless and fast and from multiple angles and sub 5 is easy

Oh yeah, make sure you know what case the bottom layer will be so that you only have to recognise the top

I have the qidi and it's not great. I recommend mgc or valk2 if you can still find one
