I've just started learning the beginner method. I'm averaging about 2:20 which I guess it pretty decent, best time was 1:45 but was a lucky one.

Newbie question, I've noticed that there are numberous beginner methods, I'm wondering if I'm looking at the wrong one.
I learnt this: https://ruwix.com/the-rubiks-cube/how-to-solve-the-rubiks-cube-beginners-method/

I thought about trying to learn some of the 2look ALL algorithms to learn a few new tricks. The problem is the OLL method solves the last layer a completely different way and I'm confused. What is a good way to slowly transition from beginner to CFOP method. Do I need a different beginner method.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forums! The beginners method that you use is the LBL method (Layer By Layer) and this is like the most common one for a beginner. At your level I don't think you need to learn 4 Look Last Layer.

There's also other advanced methods, other then CFOP, like Roux, ZZ, Petrus, etc. What 2 Look OLL does is that you first do the cross on the U layer and then you do 1 algorithm between 7 algorithms, and it makes the top side of one colour.

But, I just recommend to just solve a bunch of times, become colour neutral (ability to solve on every colour, which will help in the short and long run), solve the cross on the bottom and don't rotate too much.

Welcome to the forums!

I would recommend learning keyhole, which is a slightly faster way of solving the second layer, and try doing the cross on the bottom. but yea, practise until you can get maybe 1:30 consistently before using these techniques.

KEYHOLE? Isn't that meant for sub 12?

basic keyhole (edge in place) is a pretty simple concept if you understand intuitive f2l. in fact pseudoslotting is easy in concept but hard for recognition.

idk if color neutral is a good idea for beginners. It can end up being more confusing than helpful. (there is an important distinction between bottom layer color, side layer colors, and top layer color that may be confusing)

Keyhole as an F2L method is meant as a transition to F2L (unnecessary IMO), but you can use keyhole tricks whenever. There shouldn't be a sub x boundary to learn things. As a segway into this thread, welcome! I would recommend learning 4 look last layer (2 look OLL and PLL) using cubeskills. I would also recommend learning F2L, then going on to learn Roux, ZZ and Petrus when you're a bit faster (you'll probably be sub 40 at this point, but whatever). You don't need any new algs either, which is great.
Again, welcome to the forums! Happy cubing!

Thanks for the replies and advice, I'll take a look at keyhole but sounds advanced.

Here's what I've done over the past few days. I started learning the algs for 2look OLL and PLL and I've made significant improvements. I can solve the last later pretty consistently now in about 30 seconds. I'm finding It's taking me between 1:00 and 1:30 to solve the first 2 layers. I'm averaging about 1:45 now for last 12 solves. I've done loads of practice on the white cross and it's getter faster. I'd say completing the white corners is where I'm losing so much time. I know this will come with time, practice and experience. I think rotating the cube to locate the corners and then to find where to put each is the big issue.

EDIT, @Skewb_Cube I've been doing the white cross on the bottom. I started learning that way as I knew it would be faster in the long run.

Welcome!! Do you do any other events?

Well I do triathlons but not sure that's the type of events you mean. I don't do anything cubey.

Been looking at that keyhole thing. I've figured if I put 3 white corner pieces in then 3 2nd layer edge pieces, then do last corner and edge the way I already know, it's quicker for me. It's a good improvement. The whole F2L thing is a bit complex for me yet.

I mean other cubes like 2x2x2 or 4x4x4 or pyraminx.

Hi BigDazUK,

Welcome! That’s the method I first learned. You can probably get down to about 1:30 with that method. A while back I found this beginner’s method, which I recommend instead because its a little less complicated:

For me, this was a little more confusing for the first day, but then I got it, and it seemed easier to me. I got my time down to below 1:20 rather quickly using this method. Hope this helps!

The whole F2L thing is a bit complex for me yet.

This shows how many options are available to new learners.
I'm new too, and started transitioning from beginner to cfop over the last few weeks.

My cross is still terrible, I need to start doing it on bottom and much faster, but I watched Jperm's video on cfop and then his f2l video and decided to get my f2l learned, now its my strongest part of my solve.

I've gotten most of the 2 look oll algs learned and enjoy doing those, still no pll so after an enjoyable f2l my solve is a disgusting mix of algs and beginner stuff (which often clash and work against each other).

I'm going to search out some cross videos, its definitely the worst part of my solve

Ps, welcome, I'm also from uk.
