Hello everyone. I'm from switzerland and here's my story.

A couple years (actually more like a decade and a half) ago my brother was addicted to cubing. I guess he was 16 at the time. He used to solve all the time: at home, in the bus, at school...everywhere. As far as I remember he solved it in about a minute, maybe less I can't really remember. Me, I was addicted to skateboarding and I could not care less about cubing. The further I went was first layer and I had no intention to solve it even once.

Fast forward a couple or years (like 15 years) and my bro is getting married. Time has passed, so have the cube and the skateboard. At the wedding I was supposed to be in charge of the animations alongside my cousin. One evening, at my moms, I was looking at pictures in order to edit some kind of an embarrassing video montage of old stuff for the big day and I found this pic of my brother holding a rubiks cube, looking at the camera with this intense look. THERE. It happened. No coming back possible: I just had the stupidest idea.

The plan was: among the silly animations for the wedding there would be one about cubing. I would have called my brother in front of everyone and give him this challenge: you must solve the rubiks cube in front of everyone in less than 2 minutes (hollywood style, big screen behind him with that old rubik pic, flames around him, a timer and Carmina Burana full blast). Of course there was a twist! I would have pulled out a cube myself and say: "Oh! I almost forgot. You must beat me too." and then proceed to destroy him.

I immediately wrote my cousin and convinced her to do it with me. Wasn't hard, she likes puzzle and at the time could solve the first two layers of a cube. It wasn't my case. I had no idea I just opened Pandoras box.

So of course I had no cube. First thing I did was binge watching everything cube related on youtube: tutorials, reviews, documentaries etc...Still no cube. Must buy cube. I chose one for my brother (as a gift for the weeding): GTS3M. For me and the cousin a couple of Warriors W. Couldn't find an online shop in Switzerland (theres a great one I know of now) so I order straight from China. Have to wait 3 weeks. Find this old terrible rubiks brand at my moms, bring it home and solved a cube for the first time of my life. Took me about an hour using a youtube tutorial. I realize it was a bad idea but solving it kinda got me excited. I do it everyday, watch more youtube videos.

The cube was so bad. Stickers fell off, absolutely NO corner cutting. Watch more reviews.....mhhhh...me too want fancy cube. Order a GAN XS for myself. I can solve a cube in 4 minutes. lmao. Still order it from China (20% discount yay). Can't stand the old cube anymore. Try to clean it: I dismantle it and break it. No cubing for 3 weeks...No way. So now I've found the swiss online shop and I need a cheap cube until my XS arrives, so obviously I make the smartest choice and order a Valk m....Hey I'm a grown up with a full time job and I live in Switzerland so don't juge me!

After that I just went grinding for 2 months. I'm now between 35-40 with a PB of 21 and while the wedding has been canceled because of the coronavirus I can certify that I've been contaminated by another virus.

So yeah. Hi guys.

do you know if your brother can solve it still?

Oh I can expend on that story on many levels haha. So he live in a city 1:30 away from my mountain bear cave and I don't visit often. But our mother does every week, so I asked her to spy on him for me. She assured me he has a collection of cubes so I asked for a picture and for her to fool around with a cube and my brothers toddler, grab his attention and then ask him to solve it and film him doing so. She's always filming and taking pictures so it wasn't too suspicious. This was Plan A.

But she didn't go that week.

Plan B: told my masterplan to my sister in law and she send me a pic of his collection. Here it is:

I was like...wtf. She wrote me "these aren't real rubiks cube and he says they're broken". Ok...what do I do.

Plan C: I ordered a Meilong and gave it to my mom. Asked her to secretly give it to my brothers wife (who's a teacher). She would then give it to him saying she found it in the lost in founds at school and then proceed to Plan A. Went FLAWLESSLY. She even told him a student could solve it real fast and he took it as a chalenge haha. She filmed him and turns out he can solve it in less than 2 minutes. He uses the weirdest oldschool technique, cross up and all.

They're still getting married so really I can't wait for it. It might be next year. Hope i'll be consistently sub 30 by then.

Thanks for the welcome!

Really nice story, very entertaining, welcome to speedsolving.com! just arrived here yesterday myself.

Cool. Do you still skate?
I sometimes wish I did but its way too dangerous. I used to hurt myself all the time and its just not Woerth it. BUT i have a baby on the go so I just might build him a mini ramp and get back to it in a decade or so haha.

I'ma go ahead and promote my event now. Learn to solve it blindfolded, that will impress him!

this sound about as dangerous as skateboarding.
