Do you get made fun of at school/work for being a cuber? I get made fun of at school. One very annoying kid who follows me around always says stuff like, "You're stupid. You research Rubik's Cubes." About 2 years ago, you were really cool at my school if you knew how to solve a cube. Now, I'm the only one that has stuck with it for 2 years. I hope that I'm not the only one who has this problem.

I don't get this problem often, but I have gotten it, and really the best way to handle it is to accept it as what it is, meaningless talk made by people who just want to talk. People like to talk and will say anything to help out their pride.

As far as what that kid said, researching Rubik's Cubes doesn't mean you're stupid, it means you are dedicated to your sport enough to go research and become more knowledgeable on it. Gaining knowledge is NEVER a bad thing, gaining knowledge is how we get smarter, no matter whether it's Rubik's Cubes or Philosophy.

I just thought it was interesting that he put it that way, "researching." I was just curious if it happened anywhere else. Maybe it's just where I live. :(

When I said I was speedcubing to my friends, one of them told me it was a no-life thing but then I shown him a video and he told me he found that really impressive (I don't know if he was serious or if he realized he had been rough)

Usually what happens is people get interested and then I get self-conscious because my personality in the real world is very outgoing with friends but somewhat shy with everyone else. (And to respond to @Dr. Lube‘s point, I guess I promote Roux sometimes because I believe it to be the best method, at least for me. I’ve tried CFOP (I used it for 3 months) and ZZ, and neither of them cut it for me)

I'm just known as like the rubiks cube guy at school. I don't really cube like at school, even though I always carry around a 3x3 in my blazer, I know some people don't like it, they think its weird or stupid. Like how can I be so entertained with them for so long etc. So with my non-cuber friends I generally don't talk about cubing much. No one directly makes fun of me, but when someone ask what I'm going to do that afternoon, and I reply:"probably cube" then they often sigh or eye roll. I just ignore that, and be a cuber at home lol.

Pretty much everybody in the middle school knows me as the cubing guy. I’m not the only one. And while no one really bullies me about it, they always try to take my cubes and mess around with them. I don’t blame them they are amazing fidget toys. I sometimes cube in class and depending on the teacher I am either allowed to or I’m told to put it away. Some mess around and call me addicted. Nothing too bad though.

Are you the rubiks cube guy or the rubix kewb guy?

I don't/didn't get teased. I was homeschooled so that aspect doesn't really apply.
I did track/xc with my local high school but I was mature, worked hard, was reasonably fast and didn't cube much while at practice. People already knew me as the quiet kid and then, upon finding out that I could cube, thought it was really cool and would flip out about it (as non-cubes typically do). I wasn't known as the Rubik's cube guy, but it was well known that it was something I could do.

I know this is a pretty old thread, but why not?
I've kind of always been teased about whatever I chose to pursue. I brought a Greek Mythology book with the Olympians on the cover and I got teased for being a 'weeb' (i mean, what? That doesnt even make sense) And now that I do cubing, I just stopped caring about what they think, and my insecurities about my hobbies melted away . I only started last March like, the day before lockdown started, but whenever someone asks 'What do you do to spend time?' and I say 'I cube' they respond with 'HA! NERD!!'

And reply asking the same question. Gaming is staring at flashing screens and pressing plastic buttons.
