Total old dude and noobie solver here (<3 weeks). I used Jperm's YT video and it was a great way to help me learn to solve. My PB is around 2:30 or so and I'm pretty happy as I get more familiar with solving.

My question - anyone else here that started using his (or similar video) have any ideas on when you 'graduated' from the beginner method to CFOP or something faster?

Does it 'just happen' with practice and learning new algs? Or using this beginner method can I get a sub-2 minute solve?

I know I'll never be super fast but I'd love to have a personal goal of solving under a minute one day. :)

With a beginner method, you can get well under a minute. That said, you definitely stick with CFOP.

JPerm's videos are great - he does a wonderful job of explaining things.

Thanks for the info! Yeah I hiit my new PB today (2.10) so def getting there!

The beginners method is just a very simplified cfop when it really comes down to it, so If you practice enough you can get some pretty good times with it. Broody the cuber just got sub 10 seconds with it.

i used his f2l video to learn f2l back when i was averaging around 1:10
there have been people who got sub-20 with beginners method, but it was very hard from them to progress from there
all you need for a sub-2 minute solve with beginners is practice, just solving will get you a sub-2 minute average

My son uses the J Perm method and the tips from J Perm's Faster with the Beginner Method video, and he is just above 1 minute. He will get below a minute soon using this method. He has only been cubing a few months, and he's only seven. He started with the Speed Cube Shop righty alg and lefty alg beginner method, and used that to get to about 1:30. At this point he is a bit intimidated by 4 Look LL.

Broody the Cuber's video is impressive, but if you watch what he's doing, it appears (to me at least) that he is choosing from a broader range of algs in his 4 Look LL than the typical beginner method teaches. He's certainly not using the righty alg and lefty alg over and over to brute force the LL.

The FitnessGram Pacer Test is a multi stage...

No, you’re right, Brody is not doing that. Instead he uses multiple algorithms to do in one step what one might do in multiple iterations of the righty or lefty alg as a complete beginner. It would make one a lot faster, but as a 7 year old, I think that if he wants to learn it he should do so slowly.
It’s awesome that he’s getting into cubing!

Cool info all and thanks. Def practicing more with his beginner method and starting to watch some advanced videos and tweaking thing (for instance I started working on solving the cross on the bottom now vs the top from his video). It's slowed me down a little but in the long run I think it'll help me.

Just having fun challenging myself for sure. Waiting for my boys cubes to arrive so I can help them... I've thrown the gauntlet to them that by end of summer they have to be faster than me (and I have a few weeks headstart). heh. :D
