Bad Quality Control/Broken Pieces Moments Thread

Just a tiny little thread to see how many people got affected by qiyi cubes breaking. Which cube, and how long you had it. THIS IS NOT A HATE THREAD AT ALL, QIYI MAKES EXCELLENT CUBES, BUT THEY DO HAVE A BREAKING ISSUE.

I'll start.
My QiYi Wuxia's two centers broke, later three. It broke like 2 days after I got it. That reminded me that Qiyi has been known for cubes breaking.

My second moment was my Mini Thunderclap 4x4. A Blue, Yellow, and Orange stickerless piece broke. A day after I got it.

QiYi please improve your quality control.

I am sorry to hear about your cube problems and I do colpeatly understand your point (which is a good point), but I will have to disagree with you for the most part about Qiyi's cube quality, and let me explain: All of my main cubes are Qiyi and I have yet to have any trouble with any of mine (other then my younger brother cracking a edge piece on my 7x7, but that was not the cubes fault) I can do almost all events (other then 5x5 BLD) and I say that because I use all the cubes in a week quite a lot and I have yet to have any break, crack etc. I do however know that some of the Qiyi cubes, (larger ones to be precise) do have some trouble, but nothing that I have personal experienced. I am also a pretty rough turner, but again no trouble.

I do agree to some degree that Qiyi's plastic could be improved, but as far as they are right now I am really happy with them, and they are my favorite cube producer. I do hope that you do not continue to have trouble with your cubes.

Roughly in order of when I bought them:

My Valk 3 isn't broken.
My Wuque isn't broken.
My Square-1 isn't broken.
My Galaxy isn't broken.
My Wuhua v1 isn't broken.
My Wushuang isn't broken.
My Wuque M isn't broken.
My Wingy has a loose magnet (because I'm a skewb scrub and kept dropping the cube), but otherwise isn't broken.
My Wuji isn't broken.
My Wuxia isn't broken.
My Pentacle Cube isn't broken.
Not a puzzle, but the M-Lube bottle broke pretty easily, so yeah, Qiyi has terrible quality control.

I've had about 5 qiyi square-1 corners and ~7 volt edges break its not so much the fault of the cube but rather the cuber. I attribute all of these broken parts to my extremely rough/inaccurate turning style on square-1's. Maybe your turning isn't the best, which could be the likely cause of your problems. I have a bunch of other qiyi cubes, including multiple valks, thunderclaps, and wuques, and none of them have ever had a problem with pieces breaking, so I doubt its a problem with how qiyi produces their cubes, but I'm sure in some cases a problem could just be a design flaw in the puzzle itself.

Why are people using their own experiences to prove this guy wrong? Does anyone even know what the phrase “quality control” means? It means that Qiyi doesn’t do a good job making SOME puzzles durable, not all. smh

Why are you using this guy's experience to prove that Qiyi doesn't do a good job of making puzzles? Same logic applies.

smh at you too, friend.

I had eleven data points to offer. Most people don't have as many because I waste too much money on cubes. (Well, at least I'm expecting that most people here are little children with unspent allowance on the order of tens of dollars.) Data points are data points, regardless of whether they agree or disagree with your hypothesis. You can't selectively ignore them for your own convenience.

(For the record, I did leave out two Qiyi cubes I have from the list, but those were their old 4×4×4 and 5×5×5, which were garbage anyway and nobody should be buying them these days. Also, those didn't break either.)

One of the pieces of a center cap broke off of my Thunderclap v1 about 4 months after I bought it (in November), which made the yellow side of the cube incredibly loose even after setting tight tensions, but I used some superglue on it and left it for 24 hours and it seems good as new.

While I was assembling my friend’s WuHua v1, I accidentally put one of the corners the wrong way and the stalk broke off. I had to superglue it afterwards.

That’s not at all what I’m saying. I’m saying that QiYi has inconsistencies in the quality of their puzzles, not that QiYi makes bad puzzles.

What are you trying to prove? JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED QIYI’S BAD SIDE DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT DOESN’T EXIST. “Selectively ignore”? Yeah, there are QiYi cubes that may not break or have quality problems. However, the point is that some do, showing poor quality control. Your “eleven data points” is a mere fraction of the number of total number of products QiYi makes, my friend.

Some do, showing almost nothing.

If they break, it could be because someone was being unnecessarily rough with the puzzle. Or because of a design fault that cannot be easily fixed once the mould is made (plastic too thin, not sturdy enough, whatever). Or simply wear from doing a billion solves.

Do you consider the design-fault category to be "poor quality control", as opposed to random bad batches of puzzles showing up? If yes, then I agree that there is decent (but still anecdotal) evidence that Qiyi has "poor quality control", but on very few puzzles that they're still selling now: specifically, the Volt is the only one I've heard that people still regularly complain about.

Obviously the solution is to get one of the big cube stores (Cubicle? SCS?) to report statistics on how often people order spare parts, but I doubt they are willing to release that information publicly.

E: Also, I kind of want to highlight one gigantic issue with the cubing community as a whole. The big YouTubers and other celebrities hold disproportionately large influence over the community's opinions and people often repeat what they say without independent verification. I'm not saying this is a bad thing (it's not, because kids can't afford a dozen $100 puzzles to compare them), but this also means hearing a statement repeated multiple times isn't necessarily strong evidence that it's something a lot of people experience—it could also be a couple of popular people experiencing it a few times and everyone else repeating them. This is why I refuse to admit second-hand anecdotal evidence and offered my own first-hand evidence.

Is this really worth fighting about? Qiyi makes a great puzzle, but overall no cube is perfect and with enough wear (timeline could be changed due to rougher turning) it will break. I personally don't think Qiyi has worse quality control then say Moyu, however lets argue about something that really matters. Hope that didn't come over like a bossing 8 year old, but come on?

I see your point. However, in a professional company such as QiYi, bad batches should not be expected and puzzles should be sturdy enough to handle extremely rough turning in my opinion. I see a bit of hypocrisy in your statement. "Some do, showing almost nothing." Are you not the one that told me to stop selectively ignoring data? The frequency of cubes breaking is far more than enough to prove that there is an issue in something in QiYi's factory, yet you only seem to be accepting your data.

Guys, this isn't supposed to be a fight. Sometimes QiYi's quality control is ridiculous, like pieces breaking and things being unevenly made. I just wanted this thread to see how many peoples' cubes have broken, that's all. I apologize for, well, everything that's happened.
