Tell us about you first ever competition

I haven't been to a competition yet, but i plan to Im just waiting for one to come in florida...but its sad cause I've been Cubing sense Dec'06 and i still havent been to a comp.

I second that.

Off Topic: My parents won't allow me to got a competiton until I'm 18. 4 more years to go...

That's unfortunate. Is there a reason why? I'm lucky enough to have supportive parents who don't mind me taking off for a weekend. During the summer they're letting a friend and I drive across the country to US Nationals.

This may sound weird, but they are afraid of kidapping.
Yeah kidnapping... But why not just them go too?

That's dumb. People are too paranoid.

I hope you read this thread and finally come to the conclusion that you don't have to be sub-15 to not be ashamed of your times. Competitions are about FUN! :D
I kind of felt like that when my uncle said I could go to SFO, but I have to attend a wedding tomorrow :( My first competition will be during summer in the Philippines (though I'm not sure when it is, I'm going there for a month for my dad's sabbatical :D).

My first (and only) competition was the Indiana Winter Open. I was the fastest first time competitor with an average of 21 in the first round and 23 in the final round. I'd been cubing for almost a year already. I got a 13 second average in 2x2; I've gotten a lot better since then. I got 1:09 in OH; I've dropped ~15 off of that average since then. I got just over two seconds in magic because of +2s. 4x4 average was 2:15 because I had one bad solve and one DNF where I thought that I had finished edge pairing when I hadn't; I then proceeded to use a K4 LL but messed up and took the DNF. I did average in BLD, but I've improved a lot since then. I was just happy that I didn't DNF all three solves. I've improved in everything except for 3x3 since then. It's odd because I practice 3x3 the most!

The fun part was meeting people who share a common interest with me. I don't have any cubing friends at school (actually, I don't have very good friends at school at all), but at the competition, I could talk to people about the cube without someone trying to change the subject. That is the fun part about competitions.

Aww!! *hug*

I hope to go to the next CCC (lol, CCC = Canadian Computing Competition AND Canadian Cubing Classic) in 2009 (Toronto -- SCIENCE CENTRE PLZZ!!!) so I can go (yay, I can drive myself! ^^) and show off my awesomely HORRIBLE 3x3x3 skills (and hopefully 2x2x2 if it arrives in time).

I'm still amazed at people's cubes on YouTube; so I ordered a bunch more for me to hybridize and mess around with -- hopefully I'll be getting sub-30 averages by the time I compete... :\\

Well it looks like I'll know at least a couple people at the competition. However, I have less than 24 hours to fix the following two problems:

-My DIY keeps popping
-I'm HORRIBLE at BLD

DIY problem is probably the easiest to fix. BLD, well, I could probably get in a couple more solves. No way I can master classic pochmann in a day, so I'm going to have to use my horrible method: orientation and permutation separately, and 2 cycles

I'll probably be there around 9:30-9:45 tomorrow, getting ready, figuring out when and where I'm competing and all that stuff. By the way, this is really off topic, but did anyone see the report on the competition tomorrow on KRON4 earlier this afternoon?

My very first competition was in the 80s :D; it was a competition for children, held in Paris in November 1981. The competition was very different from today's: it was only best of 1, and best of 3 in the finals, and we couldn't use our own cubes, we had to compete with those provided by the organization... I got 1:13, which was not a very good time for me even then, and which was not enough to qualify anyway. But it was still a great experience.
(For the record, the girl who won the finals got a best time of 24 seconds, which completely amazed everybody (includong herself) in the competition room. Now 24.xx is my own official PB and I don't find it especially amazing any more, even for me :D)

I'm 14 and my mom is HOPING that Saskatchewan gets a comp that I can go to :D...

Ask Canadain Cubing.

PRINCETON 2008!!!!! I live in the princeton area so I didn't mind going. I was aiming for a sub-30 average but I got 40-something for 3x3 and I wasn't expecting much from 2x2. I was fascinated at people doing magic and I wanted one for a long time after that. I didn't do 4x4 since I wasn't as good as I was at the time. I didn't know anyone and I was really scared to introduce myself to the "fast kids" but I finally got the guts to ask "what method do you use?" to this one guy and other people got in on the conversation. I was the only person at that comp that used roux :D

Toronto Fall Open '08 was my first competition, which was a great one for me. I was one of few Americans there, which was kinda cool. I still find it funny that they call it a washroom instead of a bathroom over the border. >.<

My 3x3x3 first round was garbage, I had 37 and 38 to start, if I remember correctly, but improved after that. Barely made it to the next round, where I improved greatly, thanks to my nerves calming down, Justin Eastman got me cool down a lot before I went up there. I also got a 4.03 lucky solve in 2x2x2, which is pretty slick, considering that puts me close to top 100 singles in the world. I also met a lot of awesome people there, and can't wait for TOW/CCC.

My first competition was at Armonk Spring 2008 on April 26-27. I wasn't too good then, average just below 40 seconds but I did well in the competition with a PB average of 5! :D. I only participated in the 3x3 round on April 27 (Sunday) so I only stayed until around 11 AM. However, I did see some famous people like Tyson Mao and Alex Yu. Now I'm much faster and I actually have friends that cube (and go to competitions with me). :)

my first competiton was like last year april :P
I started cubing like 7months earlier or something and i was stuck on the 20 second barrier :P
I felt nervous as hell, and i poppped once, and i waslikke UH OH HOLY HSIODFJASODIFJ

Umm. My first comp (unofficial) was the Melbourne Cup 08. (a Horse race long weekend).

2x2: I totally screwed up, it was the first event of the competition and I had never used a stackmat before. I think I got a 6 average with several plus 2's in it. (One was a plus 4)
3x3: Yeah OK. 14 average.
4x4: By then I had settled in and i got a really nice average of 1:13 I think.
5x5: Just average.

Other events I screwed up.
It was fun even though there were only 8 people.

I hope that my first official competition will be next year in Japan somewhere, as I am going there for a ski trip and we will stay in a few cities. I will hopefully break many Aur's

My first was the Denver Open. I'd been cubing for about two months (still using the beginner method). I wasn't really very nervous, 'cause I knew I wouldn't do well. I don't think I sub 1'd the whole time (you can check my profile though). I only competed in 3x3. I took my dad, but he slept through most of it. I've only been to the Boulder Open since, but I can't wait until there's another in CO.

I hope to go to the next CCC (lol, CCC = Canadian Computing Competition AND Canadian Cubing Classic) in 2009 (Toronto -- SCIENCE CENTRE PLZZ!!!)
how come you missed the last C^3? It was at the science centre. btw the Canadian Open will likely be in a few months at the science centre

haha not really it can be called either, oh and I think you were probably the only one from America there

My first was the Cinci Spring Open. I was around 23 seconds after about 5-6 months of cubing. I was really nervous because it was my first competition. Also, about 5 Canadian cubers were there. Bob was there too. The first 3x3 round rushed by and I qualified with a 25 average. I signed up for 5x5 and broke my PB twice in 2 attempts. I was 8 seconds of qualifying and finishing my average. What helped calm my nerves was racing other cubers. My average dropped 2 seconds in the final round so it was pretty good. Like everyone else, I was worried about not doing too well or screwing up. I had a +2 but that was it.

my first was UK Open 2008, last november.
i was so ridiculously nervous, and 2x2 was the first event, which went really badly - i only JUST got a sub 10 average (9.99 :D). i got a 4.13 single, with an LL skip (U2). i was so angry, i went back after the round and did the reverse of my solve, and then got sub 2 :|
my 3x3 was terrible, and i only got a 17.33 single because of a PLL skip. i suppose i got to the 2nd round, which is ok, but overall i was really disappointed.
my 4x4 was also really bad - i got a DNF because halfway through the parity alg i did an extra turn, and then tried to go back to the beginning, but just messed up the cube. i got a decent single (1:38) with P parity, but the dedges were really easy.
my 3x3 OH was definitely the worst affected though - sup minute in the first round, and sup 50 in the second! i averaged around 38-45s at home then.
the head2head at the end was good fun, but i got seriously pwned by thom barlow :p

so yeah, i did pretty poorly, but the point was that i had an awesome day, and thats all that matters. hopefully next comp, ill absolutely smash my wca PBs :)
