I do my F and F' turns with my index finger currently, but I'm trying to start using my thumb for F'. How do you do yours? What did you start with, when did you switch and why?

I chose either, because it depends on what flows better for the alg. For instance, with a j perm or something, I use my index finger. But for others I use my thumb

Depends entirely on the alg and where your finger placements are at that point
That's true. I hadn't thought of that, I don't have alg-specific fingertricks yet, still working on recognition and things like that. I guess what I really mean is when, if at all, did you change your fingertricks to be faster? Aside from moving to fingertricks from wrist turns. (BTW I think I saw you at a comp last month...)

Is the question for F ou F' ?
Either. Mostly F', I guess. You can explain your answer with a post if you want. :)

It's important. I do F with the index and F' with the thumb (general case).
But sometimes I do F/F' with 2 thumbs (a chimp showed me this trick).

I put more thought into this topic than I should.

For the most part (a.k.a. most OLL's, PLL's, and F2L algs) I use my right index finger for F, and either my left index finger or my left thumb for F'. I found that Collin Burns constantly uses left thumb for F', especially during F2L. His F2L algs video shows him doing this quite a bit. Obviously, it's better to use left thumb for simpler finger tricks, like The F' on a T-Perm or a J-Perm. It felt kind of awkward at first, but I've gotten more comfortable with this over time, especially after learning algs/incorporating fingertricks that included F2, as it's actually pretty easy to double-flick an F2.

For 3x3, I've personally found doing F' with your right thumb (by pushing upward or what have you) ruins the fluidity of the solve, whereas doing it with either your left thumb or index retains fluidity. For big cubes, however, I've found that using right thumb for F' (especially for certain algs, like the F' at the end of a Y-Perm) keeps the cube more stable and makes it easier to hold while still executing with decent TPS.

Thanks! I really appreciate the well-thought-out answer.

For F I use my right index finger almost all the time, but sometimes also my right thumb or my left thumb, for F' I use my right thumb or my right index finger (by pushing UFR to UFL) and I try to get used to do F' with my left index finger, as well.

And in some strange algs I even use other fingers (e.g. in one of my N-Perms I use my right ringfinger to do F')
