[Help Thread] Yau5 Discussion

Hello everyone:

I recently picked up Yau, 1-2 months ago, and prefer it over basic redux. I am looking for advanced tips/tricks for 5x5 for Yau or redux, either one.

I've been on CubeSkills, but only found advanced 4x4 tips. Anybody have help for me?

Thanks guys (and gals)

You should watch some example solves. Jay, Yau and Pedro Roque has some videos on their channels. Feliks use Redux on 5x5, so you won't find anything useful on CubeSkills

Kevin Hays has a nice series on youtube for big cubes in general "Tuesday tips" on youtube.
That's just redux tips, watch Jaydens or Roberts videos aswell.

Edit:
I just tried Yau5 for the first time and it seems very fun and fast, but there's one thing I can't rap my head around; how do you do first 4 (non cross)edges? I know how to pair edges but doing two adjacent F2L edges seems like it requires a lot of thinking to get right, how do you do it?

They don't have to be adjacent; you can always "shift" the free slot over if you have opposite pairs solved. See also Jayden's sort of recent video:

I just do the cross edges, then do essentially free-slice while preserving the cross. I know that's not the answer you were looking for, but it's my compromise solution.

Makes sense, I only watched the 5x5 part the first time lol

Yau5 is my favorite 5x5 method. I average ~2:15 or so (I don't practice 5x5 much)
This is how I solve the cube after the big cross is made.
  1. Solve 2-4 edges through free-slicing.
  2. Put 2 of said edges in the back F2L slots (RB, LB)
  3. Freestyle-solve the remaining edge pairs.
Why is it important to make 2 F2L pairs? Is there an advantage? Am I doing anything wrong?

Why is it important to make 2 F2L pairs? Is there an advantage?

The advantage is that you already have to put two formed tredges in two slots anyway, so you might as well form full F2L pairs to save some time on the 333 stage. The disadvantage is that there's a constraint when forming the fifth through eighth tredges (that at least two of them must be F2L edges). It's neither uniformly better than your method nor uniformly worse; you might want to try both ways to see which you're faster with.
